Why on earth are threads closed?

And who plays God?

Fair crack of the whip; if a question was ever worth asking, that fact may be gauged on its merit as judged by other members. If there are even a few replies, keep it there for goodness' sake.

It is always worth an answer or a clarification.

Things change, but if the topic is closed, things shrivel.

Threads auto close after 18 months of inactivity.

Some threads naturally need to close as it becomes a slanging match.

Thread no longer needed eg lounge guesting monthly
thread is way off topic
Nasty verbal slanging matches
reports by members bringing ugly to Moderator's attention

They are called moderators........very knowledgeable and experienced senior members who give up their own time to allow others to enjoy this space

Certainly they auto close with no new posts after 18 months

If you feel you have something to add to a closed thread, contact a moderator with your request and it will be considered.

One of my threads was recently closed after one person complained within that thread that there was too much digression from the main topic within the thread (even though some people were still replying on the main topic).

Another of my threads was closed after I described my usage of a drug one can buy at Woolworth's for $7 that I found handy when travelling, and there was a 95% pile-on on me from people who have never used it (why the pile-on on me, and not say Woolworths, or the manufacturer or Government health authorities, I remain unsure).

Anyhow, I don't own the site. The owner and his delegates can close whatever thread they like.
Regards,
Renato

One of my threads was recently closed after one person complained within that thread that there was too much digression from the main topic within the thread (even though some people were still replying on the main topic).

Having just had a look over that thread, I'd say half the posts in it are off-topic. Further, nearly 20 posts were deleted at one stage or another for being even further off-topic. You are welcome to report the last post, the one where I closed it, requesting it be re-opened to submit new information, but any posts not on-topic will be deleted and if it continues in that direction, it will simply be closed again. The discussion taking place in there was completely irrelevant to your first post when it was closed.

As you say, 95% of respondents took an opposing view to you and realistically, the thread needed to end before things became too heated. It was heading down a dangerous path.

Keeping the peace means sometimes having to close lively debates that others think should remain open. If they did remain open, things might heat to the point that half the membership was suspended. While that might make for an easy week for me, it is not the right path to be heading down.
