Why no reward seats from anywhere in Asia to SYD in late July / Early August ?

Hi,

I'm trying to burn some QF points on a trip to Europe in a month. I know its very short notice, but with a bit of work, I can manage to get to Europe, and then back to DXB or HKG using standard reward seats. Then trying to get to Sydney but it is just about impossible. I want to avoid the orange star, and I think I have tried all of the ports that QF flies to, plus DXB, out of all Australian ports (Per, Syd, Mel, Adl, Bne and Cairns) and getting no hits at all. Looking in the last three/four days of july, first three days of August. Is it high season for travelling to Australia ? Its the middle of winter - why is everything sold out? I am a silver QFF. Haven't seen any JAL or Malaysian options either - do you have to call their hotline for those ?

Regards
LP

I have noticed that there are fewer reward seats out of Australia as well especially on EK.

I have been struggling with availability for November and February.

July and August are northern hemishpere school holiday periods and prices go up substantially at that time in line with demand, the airlines also remove the award seats to maximise turnover. Best bet could be to look at mid week flights leaving at unsociable hours.

I have noted a general decline in availability of QF awards across the board. I expect QFF will tell us that they are carrying record numbers of FF award travelers. But that does not help people trying to redeem the massive numbers of points that have flooded the market in the last few years. I think they are trying to push people towards the Points+Pay fare options rather than classic awards, especially for routes where the addition of fuel fines basically takes the classic awards into the Point+Pay redemption range anyway.

The July/August dates you mention are not school holiday period, but are peak travel period for travel to Europe and North America as its the middle of their summer vacation time. So I would not expect to see too many new award seats released unless its in the last week before travel.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I'm also seeing nothing at all from NRT to Australia in J for April/May of next year.

take a breather! Call the qantas call centre and have them do all the work for you, looking at options and available airlines (including all oneworld partners).

Then look and see if you can book on line, or via another source (such as BA/AA etc if you have points there).

it costs you nothing to have the agents so all the leg work. Only when you come to book are you slugged.

+1

Fortunately I've had a 100% success rate with WP requests for Y+ seats!

Which is good for QFF WPs, but not of any benefit to Gold or Silver members, or those members of other OneWorld programs wanting to redeem awards in the classic buckets.

According to BA.Com, plenty of availability in all cabins HKG-MNL on CX (I looked from 27 July onwards to 31 July), not all flights.

Economy Award availability on QF20 on the 28th; Economy and Business Award available on the 30th.

I'm showing on the 28th, but not on the 30th. Then again, I'm looking for 2 seats, so maybe that is why.

There are no EK award seats in both J or F either into or out of Australia. Either QF have been pulled them, or they have restricted them. I have raised this issue with QF to no avail (as on the calander view it shows availability, but upon enter a date only Economy will be shown).
