Why is it so expensive to fly to Europe on Qantas?

I have flown QR in J KUL>DOH>JNB returning CPT>DOH>KUL for the last couple of years. Great product..Food seats/beds everything excellent. Lounge in DOH has many food drink options.

Melbourne to LA to NYC to LHR then Dubai then Melbourne round the world ticket in J with Wantas ......price 10000AUD 20 April starts.... So cheaper than direct Mel To LHR ...... Return ...I should not be writing this.

Except for the QR lounges in DOH and LHR that are exempt from the oneworld rules. (ie, there are 4 QR lounges in DOH, only 2 of them are usable if not flying QR J/F)

6 lounges actually, 4 of them dire...

Yes I do lots of domestic flying. Am also considering flying Virgin here too. Qantas seems to use its oldest most tired plane on the Perth route and more often than not the flights are delayed. I just think Qantas doesn't care much about its Perth customers.

As a AB Gold flying QR Y I had no problem accessing the Al Reem (I think that was the name, the one with the huge water feature) lounge. One of the best lounges I've visited, so can't be too unhappy about that.

Another option is booking the middle flights out of EU as they can be significantly cheaper. Use your first return to get there to start with and back at the end. Using OSL or DUB is usually a cheaper way to get to the EU as well. It's cheaper to fly US-EU-Australia than direct U.S.-Aust in many cases.

That's interesting .... Cheaper US-EU-Australia than direct U.S.-Aust ..... How come ?

$5200 for Sfo-jfk-lhr-OSL-lhr-hkg-bne r/t at a time when bne-lax was $6500

Nested a deal SFo-OSL with OSL-BNE. You can easily get cheap flights from Canada to Asia and it's cheaper to fly from Asia to Australia than vice versa. There is far more options via Asia or Europe than there is via the west coast.

Noted and booked for future travel

My next trip is BNE>CAN>CDG>AMS>PEK>CAN>BNE. All in J on CZ/AF. Booked and paid for it here in Beijing for a tad over 22000 yuan...about AUD4500. Excellent value

The "longer" flight times are due to padding of the schedule in case of delays so that the flights are officially "on time". The aircraft speeds along in the air at about the same speed so the actual time between takeoff and landing is the same. Still it means having to wait around more at the terminal.

There are many that do not like transiting through the Middle east.

Have you tried the other One World partner Finnair (AY). I wonder if you can get a fare from PER to Europe via SIN,BKK,HKG and then HEL with QF or CX and then AY. Some say a 2 stop into Europe via Asia and HEL is better than the Middle east crossroads

If you fly AY (& the new J looks great) I would strongly recommend using CX out of Aus: QF treated my like rubbish when I chose to use them for the code-share flight to the far east. Despite complaints, no one has bothered to actually respond… QF customer care is a complete misnomer as QF do not care about pax.

You will notice my BNE>HKG>CDG>HKG>BNE in December QF wanted AUD9919 for that one!!
