Why does Qantas persist with 747-400 thirty years plus rust buckets.

Pretty certain but there are some curious thoughts about Qantas 747s being expressed. It is always good to hear an experienced Qantas pilot enjoying the flying of a Qantas 747.

I've run out of popcorn. Should I get some more?.

I Wish QF can keep the 747-400 for a bit longer.

JB747, with all the rigorous checks an airframe goes through, how long could a 747-400 continue safely operating?.
I note the B52 still flying sorties after 50 years?

I don't understand. 1980's Qantas picked up the Boeibg 747-400 and I have flying in these machines ever since. Whether it's the Brisbane LAX or Syd- Jo'burg run it's just horrible. Same rattling, poor finish, horrible seats with worst pitch in APAC airlines. Please when will it end! DrBob737

The first QF 744 VH-OJA was delivered on 17 Aug 1989 so even if it was still in service it would only be 26 years old. If you get a bit nostalgic you can pop by its new home at HARS at Illawarra Regional Airport.

Watch this amazing 747 landing

Have we decided that the OP was a troll yet?

Figured it was a troll from the first second, but didn't really care. Nothing like a collective opportunity to express our love for the queen of the sky's.

I'll add the "welcome" to the OP but will also offer the suggestion that the new 787s will be very difficult to be considered "rust buckets" at any point in their future. Hope Boeing used enough UV inhibitor though...

Happy wandering

Fred

PS As long as the A330s are missing Prem Economy I will definitely prefer the 744s

I have only flown first class once and that was on VH-OJP, so I will always hold this as a cherished memory of the beloved 744s. I'm happy with premium economy.

I'm hoping to score a flight in the old F seats on an unrefurbished 744 - I think there are two left?

Even if an aircraft is 30 years old, a well maintained example is likely to continue to provide reliable service for quite some time yet. And given the current oil price, I too would fly them around for a little bit longer.
