Why does Qantas persist with 747-400 thirty years plus rust buckets.

Nice to hear that. We are QF Haneda to Sydney in early July and the ERs seem to operate that route quite regularly. I was hoping to luck it out on the day as I've never been on one.

And then you fly on an EK 777 with a 2x3x2 J product

Every airline that has been in business for a reasonable period is going to have a range of aircraft. Smarter travelers will select the right aircraft

I've only flown EK on their A380s, never tried their 777s, so I must be a smart traveller!

You just reminded me: Last week I wandered back to the second section of J on a QF747 and saw that it was a 2x3x2 layout. OMG!! I couldn't believe it! Who would pay J fare to be sitting between two other people? I scurried back to the pointy end real quick, shut my eyes and pretended I was in F.

To answer your question, a majority of the EK fleet is 2-3-2 in J

I hope that our welcoming team haven't scared the OP away. :p

Welcome to the OP, although it's not exactly a first post that'll win friends around here.
Dedicated 747 lover right here, will always choose a 747 over anything else, no the QF ones don't feel dated (flown BA lately) as all bar two are BSI's / same seats as QF A380's

Best seat I've ever had on an aircraft was 2K on a CX 744 on a day flight. With the fuselage curving in front there was no need to strain my neck whilst watching the world pass by beneath. I'd take a window seat in the nose of a 747 any day, and upstairs always has that cosy feel if you're not in the nose.

I don't care, I just like flying and I just like flying Qantas. As long as it has wings & engines and a big Red Roo on the tail and a professional up front.

A Qantas 747 would be pretty close to having zero depreciation now so with the lower fuel prices the last eleven planes can make profits without being 100% full.

Geez those 747-400's are pesky - too young to be considered a true 80's baby, too old to be considered a cool 90's kid.;)

Reminds me of a conversation with one of my in-laws who was studying to become a Travel Agent at Tafe not too long ago, the lecturer was adamant in recommending they steer clients away from QF, as they still had aircraft from the 70's...

It wasn't factually correct, but amusing none the less.

I wonder if that lecturer would say the same about DL, who has been buying up all the old second hand jets they can get.

The thought that a Qantas 747 is a rust bucket is ridiculous as all of their planes are fully serviced. I have flown on 747s for years and never had a problem in flight with Qantas.
In recent times the A380 seems to have mechanical issues but nothing too bad.
The 787s will allow more point to point flights so that will give Qantas the opportunity to retire some 747s.

And given that RUST is... strictly speaking... the corrosion of IRON I wonder where it is visible to passengers on a 747....

No rust marks on the slacks so far. I moved from economy to business to first on the 747 with Qantas from about 1978 travelling to the US. Going back a bit I enjoyed the 747 SP which could fly directly to Los Angeles.
