Why do thread subscription emails randomly stop?

Why is it that thread subscription emails just randomly stop being sent?

I have to come and manually check my Subscribed Threads page, visit the threads that I haven't been notified about, unfollow them, refollow them and then the notifications restart but for how long.... nobody knows!

I think they only notify you once until you engage with the thread again. You have to read the thread before it resets the notification flag, otherwise you won't get another notification on the same thread. It's to stop you from getting barraged with tons of notifications about threads you aren't actually reading actively.

Yes, I know that is how the notifications are supposed to work and, for the most part, they do. However, there are occasions when there is a new message posted since I last visited a thread and I do not receive a notification.

It is random when this happens and the the particular thread is random too.

This is still happening, @support.
Probably is, but it's either the behaviour of Xenforo (which we can't change) or a bug in Xenforo (which we need to wait for a patch to fix). I would say it's the former. You'll read a thread but perhaps not actually see the most recent post/it doesn't identify that you have seen it, and so wont re-notify you.

There's also the chance that you're seeing an update before it's able to notify you. Contrary to belief, emails aren't sent instantly when posts happen, there's a schedule that runs in the background. If the schedule hasn't run before you next log on, you might think it hasn't notified you, but it might not have had the chance to yet.

TL;DR – Nothing I can do.

Given that you don't know whether it is a) behaviour, or b) a bug, has a bug report been raised with Xenforo?

Also, noting that the 'behaviour', if that's what it is, is sub-optimal for what was supposed to be the premium, next-gen forum software, wouldn't that also be worth either raising a potential bug report or giving the feedback?

I use several other forums that also use Xenforo and I see this behaviour/bug on all of them.

Understood.

Then it has probably been raised and has either been noted as "as designed" or "to be fixed". I believe right now they're hard at work on the next major release of Xenforo, and while I agree they should be focusing on bugs first, almost no company ever does.

For full disclosure, I have not raised the bug with them, if it is that. For further disclosure, I'm not going to. I would encourage you to register an account at XenForo community and note the issue yourself and see what they say.

As for this supposed to be the premium, next-gen forum software, I'd say we're in a better position than when we had vBulletin. There will always be pro's and con's. We have more pro's on Xenforo. YMMV.

Sorry, that wasn't a dig at you or this site, rather it was aimed at Xenforo. I agree that we are in better position than with vBulletin.

Possibly its because when a "ignored" member posts and so you don't go to read because of non-notification? At least that's what I have observed

Yes, I have seen that behaviour too which is to be expected. However. this also happens with members who are not on my ignored list (I'm not sure that I even have any members on my ignored list for this site).

It has happened to me when an existing thread has had a post moved to, after which there is no longer any subsequent alerts...
