Why do people ......

Its the same as at the baggage carousels...
I stand close to the carousel at its emergence from airside TO DETER RUDE PEOPLE FROM BARGING IN FRONT OF ME WHEN THEY SEE THEIR BAG, instead of waiting until it gets to them down the line.
I witnessed a disgusting display of this recently when a group of "oriental" group travellers tried to push those waiting upstream out of the way to secure their bags, when 5 seconds later they would have them at their legs:evil:

I prefer to generalise rather than nominate a particular country, lest I court objections.

We all come from somewhere in (and out of) this world.

There is usually a line on the ground a foot or two back from the carousel where people should stand and wait which allows others further down the line to be able to see when their bag is coming down the conveyor and also space for people to pull their bags off and down etc, but no, the halfwits immediately rush up and stand right next to the thing blocking the view and blocking access as if its going to get them their bags a bit quicker...

Exactly. The whole point of standing back makes it easier for everyone to see the bags and then when they get them, to get out of the way! It is amazing how many people don't think that through when they are standing as close as possible to the belt.

My goodness, this has happened to me with a group of ummm...... hmmmmm, can't think how to describe their ethnicity ...... oh well, doesn't matter, it happened! :-|

I just hope I won't be around when china becomes the super power. Theyre going to be a lot harder to tolerate than the Americans! :)

Guilty as charged your honour! :)

I am almost without exception in an aisle seat, and usually unbelt and stand up as soon as the sign goes off. Couple of reasons for this - I've been sitting for between 1 and 15 hours and really want to stand, and I like to get my luggage out of the overhead and be 'ready' when people start to shuffle off the plane. I'll often grab down bags for the middle/window seat pax in my row while I'm at it. I'm quite happy to allow all rows in front of me to disembark first - no bully-boy rampaging down the aisle here! :p

I share casanovawa's frustration with people who crowd the carousel...so not necessary.

+1 for me.

I usually travel with a couple of colleagues, so one of stands at the carousel, the other 2 further back. All the luggage gets passed backwards - one of them steps forward when they see we've grabbed a bag. A bit like a bucket line I guess, and means there are 2 less people crowding the area. :)

On a similar theme, why do people crowd the boarding gate, especially when the annoncement usually after frequent flyer status members, we will be boarding from back to front, i see people rushing to get to the gate and they are not at back of the plane, usually i am and they defintiely dont look like status flyers. My wife and i wait usually wait to board, makes it much more relaxing, sitting in the seats in the gate area and then board, by the time we walk down the aisle, most people have finished with the overhead bins and are in their seats. same at the end, we usually last off, from the back of the plane. Sometimes you see the more elderly passengers wait as well, as they know they wont be as quick. however you see others, will be struggling with bags, children, walkers etc and keep going so they can get off and cause nightmare if you get stuck behind them. Again at the baggage, my wife will have the carry on luggage and wait back, I go and find a little position not to many peolple to get the luggage. My wife and i also scan the immigration queue, try to pick the smallest or the most organised looking queue. Generally works very well.

Welcome to AFF Bodie! :)

I think you have listed everyone's favourite scenario i.e. waiting back and boarding last, thus avoiding any issues with waiting in the aisles for pax to stow their luggage and sort themselves out in general. The one big 'if' or 'but' (IMO) is ensuring overhead space at or near your seat row. I guess in your case if you are down the back and boarding last you can probably stick it anywhere and retrieve it on your way off the plane, but if sitting near the front and having to 'swim upstream' against the flow when disembarking to retrieve it can be a real pain, which is why I like to board relatively early so as to find convenient overhead space. Otherwise, I would be boarding as late as possible every time!

Thanks for the welcome.

Its all a matter on the nature of your flight and your onward activities as you said. A business trip with only carry on, the passenger wants to get out and get to taxi queue ahead of the herd. Therefore getting off the plane a bit quicker can make a diifference, with carry on within reach. Sim people that need to make flight transfers and wants/needs to get the shuttle/train/transfer desk and are cutting it fine with time. People returning from a trip, all you want to do is get home, shower etc. Walking outside to taxi and standing in line for 30 minutes, does test patience. We have done that with carry on only, but we think, we're home. My travel is purely leasure travel, so 10 minutes doesn't worry me, getting off the plane . Domestically at our destination, we get the shuttles into town. They go very reg, so for us its not too much of a worry. I am on a weekend away after all.
International flights if leaving from sydney, we allow heaps of time, so no mad rush, from the domestic flight, and after getting to international terminal and getting through immigration etc, we sit down and have a coffee.
I tend to think I have enough stress at work, so try to relax and enjoy the travel experience, even the airport and not worry about getting on or off a plane. For some however their work involves getting of and off a plane.

Yep this is why I stand up as soon as the flight lands. Of course, I only do so when near the front of the plane, else I wait a few minutes.

Completely agree about being pushed for time when I'm working hence the need to get ahead....

One time I landed in AKL the flight was early. So early in fact that the immigration guy took a few minutes before he could figure out how to process me as the flight wasn't on his system yet.... That didn't save time, but was pretty funny.... :)

Because to some people it is important getting off the aircraft as quickly as possible. I really do not want to sit around in the aircraft waiting for people to gather their belongings from this overhead bin and that overhead bin.

To me every minute is important. Just the other day Qantas was 15 minutes late and then the luggage was a little delayed I missed the 9:00pm Coachtrans by a few minutes and had to wait for the 9:40pm Coachtrans. In this situation it was Qantas and the luggage carousel with the delays but potentially a few minutes wasted on board the aircraft waiting to deplane means ~45-60 minutes delay in getting to my hotel room on Sunday night.

As for luggage carousels if I happen to get down there first then I expect people to respect that and not hang back behind me and push me ouf of the way to try and get their bag because they could not be bothered waiting at the first vacant spot ~10-15 seconds away.

... check luggage when they can avoid doing so¹?

¹ While staying within advertised limits.

I

I hate how people will put there bag down 5 rows behind where they are sitting and then want to go and get it and still get off with everyone else or yell to the person near there bag and want us to crowd surf it to them.

Or worse put it 5 rows in front so its easy to get on the way out - too bad for people sitting there that cant find room

Always be careful when critiquing others, as you do not know why they do what they do...

Now which of these behaviours do I exhibit? And why?

stand up to disembark as soon as the seat belt light is turned off.

I have a laugh every time you see people standing hunched up in their seat space waiting to get off when the plane is unloaded in seat order.

I stay seated until it's my rows turn and off I go.

To retrieve my expensive camera equipment from the overhead before anyone makes off with it. (and why I try to place it one locker forward of my seat so I can watch it during the flight)

Matt

Why do people care whether people get up? Why do people not get up? Why sit there letting the blood pool in your veins even more than is necessary?
