Why being upgraded to first class isn’t always a perk - AFR article

It's a piece of humour! And well written to suit that purpose. Anyone flying premium cabins knows the call sign is switched off, this was just a humorous take on it, a bit of poetic licence to add colour.

It doesn't matter if there was, or wasn't, smoking in premium economy. Again. poetic licence to add colour to the story. It wouldn't be the same otherwise.

On boarding a CX flight he was asked to turn right instead of left.
Tell him he's dreaming.

drron, I was also sure he wrote that - but now the article says he was asked to turn left?? Has the article been modified or did we both misread it?

Clearly not at all bitter about that though.

Along with Miranda Devine and Gerard Henderson, in bad company. I mean how on earth did Fairfax ever let those looney-tune hacks allow their ignorant views to see the light? And if not Fairfax, what is left? (pardon the pun :p).

Maybe the story just didn't need to be written then? It isn't funny nor even clever writing. It's just stupid.

Humour is different for everyone. We don't all like the same comedians, or same comedy programs on TV. I watch a whole Seinfeld episode and can't even crack a smile... it doesn't appeal to me and I don't get it. I guess that's your reaction to this piece, but others will see it differently.

You and I obviously have very different ideas on well written humour. To me it simply read as someone trying to look like he wasn't bitter that he always walks down to the back on the rare occasions that he flys.

Isn't it a prerequisite of humourous writing that it is actually funny?

millions find Seinfeld funny. I just plain don't get it. I guess it's the same with this piece. I thought the article came together perfectly.... mentioning a smoking flight, regardless of whether it exists or not, set up the finale a few sentences later (etc). For me, it sets a scene and executes it well.

The same principle applies to many things. I don't 'get' Tracey Emin's bed. I don't think it's art. But plenty will disagree with me and state it is ground breaking.

I think the piece was satirical rather than just plain old humour. Most wouldn't get it, with FFers being both the target of the satire and the audience for it. Whatever it was, it was certainly oddball rubbish, but the author did have the guts to put himself out there for ridicule, in a bid to entertain a very small minority of readers who actually understood what he was trying to do!

Alternatively, it's just plain rubbish with no genuine intent or reason to exist.

I think he achieved his aim.:)
