Re: Cheap Duty Free Liquor Airports - the JW Black Index

Whiskey is the American spelling. Drop the E when referring to Scottish

You are quite correct sir - a mistake I constantly make, despite knowing better!

No, just straight. Not really strange because I probably really am a bogan :D

Nothing wrong with straight - would only have a problem if you were adding a mixer ;) Laphroig is the one whisky (note: no "e" Spruce!! :)) I prefer with a little bit of water. The rest, neat.

OT. On some days, drinking decision goes something like this: Does it contain alcohol? If Yes, then drink.

I can relate - but personally I'll drink something other than whisky on those days.

Also I don't drink the stuff. ...... Given I like to enjoy some of the finer things in life. I suspect I am missing out on one of life's great pleasures. .

You are - give it a go :) I started with a bottle of Glenfiddich 12 that someone gave me as a gift, and have never looked back!

Mine's a Glenmorangie 18 - if and when you can find it.... Taste for it, derived from many Wednesday evening gatherings of the Vientiane Single Malt Club (VSMC)

How interesting - I guess you need to find some way to liven things up in Vientiane ;) (I've loved the other parts of Laos I've visited - just not Vientiane).

Glenmorangie 18 was one I didn't really enjoy though. Certainly not a bad whisky, just not quite to my personal tastes.

Re: Cheap Duty Free Liquor Airports - the JW Black Index

I'm a fan of the peaty Islay Whiskys: Laphroaig, Lagavulin, and Ardberg in particular.

Re: Cheap Duty Free Liquor Airports - the JW Black Index

Laphroaig or JW Blue are favorites in this corner! I'm also a fan of the whiskey stones, excellent for chilling without diluting.

Whisky stones...sounds like an affliction! Perhaps it is something you get when you over indilge on the single malt!

My doc said that pain was calcification build up and that I should drink more water, but now I know the truth.

I just throw the bottles out when they are empty :)

Agree, sometimes it's better to have no record of the consumption volume of the said liquid :D

You know you enjoyed it, but do you really need to know how much :D:shock::D

wafliron, if there was a QF whiskey status you'd have LTG and P1 status. *bows down in admiration*

I wonder what benefits PG would confer?? :)

I used to... but then thought "why not make a feature out of it". It looks pretty cool in the room it's in - at least to my hasn't-got-one-iota-of-interior-design-skill eyes ;)

Oh, I don't have to worry too much about that - I only keep the first empty bottle of each variety ;):D

I love a good whiskey - if there's one I like on offer I'll gladly forget *any* of my favourite beers to enjoy a glass of liquid silk.

My all-time favourite: Edradour

It's rather difficult to find, but a JW Blue or one of the older Macallans will tide me over - not the same, but certainly not the gasoline, most of my friends seem to enjoy (Red, Black 100 Pipers) ;)

That said, they mix it - so they don't appreciate the pleasure of drinking a fine whisky. These days I order a bottle of Black for them to mix and a glass (or 3) for me to enjoy au natural. :)

I'd count myself as a novice/eager student at drinking Whisky. And at a dram a week, not a fast drinker (sadly). But it means the following army is always ready for disposal :p

Ardbeg 10yo
Glenfiddich 12yo
Highland Park 12yo
Balvenie Goldencask 14yo
Johnnie Walker Green Label 15yo
Balvenie Portwood 21yo

Thoughts on Above:
Highland park 12yo is an outstanding single malt entry point (really shows up the Glenfiddich 12yo as a basic single malt);
Ardbeg 10 really is a lovely entry into Islay peat;
Johnnie Green is an interesting blended malt and worth having before it disappears forever;
Balvenie Goldencask just doesn't do much for me - pretty lightweight and not nearly as multifaceted as the
Balvenie 21yo Portwood, which is just a divine spirit and my pick of the bunch.

If you show an interest in Whisky while passing thru SIN Duty free, they will let you taste the Balvenie 21yo... just do it. Also, if you haven't already stumbled upon ralfy.com, then go check out an enthralling whisky enthusiast with a lot of knowledge.

Colour? I prefer a shade of tan.
Brand? Just about any (but I did draw the line at the old COR 10 - if you are old enough to remember)

And they still ask why I gave it up.

Anything that tasted like a product of the Commonwealth Oil Refinery was always going to be a risk :)
