If you were just looking at red, the current two bottles for $49 compares very favourably with dans at $30.85, given its 1.125l vs 700ml.

2.25Lof JW Red - the perfect birthday present for those relo's who bought you cough Christmas gifts... (I can't think of any other reason to buy it).

I dont mind it with Dry, at that price its a bit of a no brainer versus RTD options.

I must really be a bogan :) I bring some back from dutyfreestores.co.nz at NZD54 for two 1125ml when I can and drink the stuff just on ice.

No personal offence intended (to anyone). I swear I'm not a snob about it - honest - it's just that even for a baseline mixer with dry or coke, I can taste JW Black as being smoother than Red, to the point where I won't buy Red anymore...

Is it a case of the old saying "once you've had black, you'll never go back"? For me, I guess so. But I'm sure there are plenty of members here would would make a similar assertion about JWB, so it really is horses for courses.

Re: Cheap Duty Free Liquor Airports - the JW Black Index

It's what happens when governments sell off airports, and then said airport's new owners grant a monopoly to one company to provide "duty free" liquor shops in that airport.

As an aside, every time I read this thread I still can't help but think "why on Earth is anyone buying JW Black" :)

Yes its a currency that is available worldwide just like a Big Mac...see the Economist Big Mac index!

The NZ price today of a 1L JWB is $37 if you use the 20% off offer by NZ D/F.

D/F in AUS is just way out there from a price perspective, the only reason to buy locally is convenience.

or if you are forced by not being able to buy it at the departure point.

No offence taken at all.

Well, I don't find the black all that much better than red. Perhaps I'm becoming less able to differentiate as I age. So, to experiment and perhaps to learn, I have ordered a 1000ml JW double black for NZD55.92 to pick up inbound into NZ in February for Mrs SFSC and myself to have for afternoon drinkies whenever we are staying somewhere without a lounge to see if we can differentiate another step up from black.

Have you tried any of the scotches that are actually... err... nice, though? ;) If not, you should, at least to see if you appreciate the difference. Even the entry-level, widely-available single malts (e.g. Glenlivet 12yo, Glenfiddich 12yo) are way better than JB Red or Black to my taste buds. They are a small step up in price (especially from JB Red), but nothing too extravagant.

I've consumed a single malt or two in my time. I enjoy Laphroaig unsullied by ice.

As to blended whiskies, I have found a JW blue or two in LHR T3 BA lounge and on board BA quite nice as well. Though I don't think I would ever actually buy a bottle of the blue.

Had JW Blue at LHR T5 a few times, often purchase D/F a Glenlivet 18yo but my favourite is the Macallan 18yo, very nice but rather expensive!

But with a few drops of water? :)

I find it really strange that you enjoy, e.g., Laphroig, but are also happy with JW Red. Note I'm not being critical here - your taste buds are your own, of course, and I'm not into "snobbery" of any kind - just making a personal observation.

All the JWs above red have the same flaw, to my mind: all OK+ whiskeys, but all too expensive for what they are, easily outdone by others costing far less at each of their respective price points.

Agree that Glenlivet 18 is very nice - just finished a bottle unfortunately. Haven't tried Macallan 18, but it's on my "to buy when passing through non-Australian duty free" list. I found a new personal favourite this year - Glenmorangie Finealta. Sensational drop - but not available in Oz yet, as far as I know, and will likely be hideously expensive when it is.

Whiskey is the American spelling. Drop the E when referring to Scottish

I suspect that only Ireland now has the "E" as I believe that the " official" U.S. ruling is now that it's spelt without the "E"
Having said that Japan, Canada etc also spell it without the "E"

of course the Irish will be different!

i have American Whiskeys that ignore officialdom......they always needed to differentiate themselves from the poms. History is a powerful motivator for word and label construction

No, just straight. Not really strange because I probably really am a bogan :D

OT. On some days, drinking decision goes something like this: Does it contain alcohol? If Yes, then drink. I can recall drinking something labelled whisky (or perhaps whiskey :D ) made locally in Northern Cyprus and purchased in a local supermarket in Girne for about the equivalent of AUD4.50 (700 or perhaps 750ml) and comparing it to JW Red.
