Air New Zealand GM International Airline, Ed Sims, studied PAX types to better understand their demands, comming up with 4 seperate catagories named after "The Simpsons" characters.
Biggest group of 29% 'Socialites', are Bart Simpsons. Typically they can't entertain themselves, so need external stimulation and direction and require the experience of the Airline to do so for them.
The 'Territorialists' at 26% are Mr Burns, and want their own piece of the aircraft and to be left alone. They claim their territory and form a close relationship with their space, notes Sims"While they are highly involved in the flight, it is on a selfish basis - it's about them"
The 17% 'Disengaged Jaded Flyers', or Mo the barman, are very hard to please and just want to get from A to B, to them it's a bus trip, and have a complete lack of enthusiasm.
Lisa Simpson, or 'Cocooners', feel that the flight is a neccessary part of the trip but not the trip itself, they entertain themselves, and want to zone out and get there.
At 11% 'The Positivists' or Marg Simpsons are planners and organisers, are typically fidgety, excited, and the flight is part of the holiday. They want the fun to start as they board, and they love the romance of travel.

So which are you? I guess I'm Lisa on most occassions, but have been known to morf into Mr Burns

Cheers Dee

Like straitman, I don't fit into any of these either. I tend to like my own space and largely keep to myself on a flight. I like to engage with the staff and be friendly and polite and understand that their job isn't always easy (especially if they've been dealing with a difficult passenger). I like the odd bit of attention if it involves being bought something from 'up the pointy end' that I usually wouldn't be entitled to (like a glass of good bubbly or the like, nothing major). I tend to not talk to other passengers which may make me appear rude or arrogant, but I just like some peace and quiet to listen to my music, or watch my movie, or read my book/magazine.

The stereotyping of travellers? What would Ryan Bingham think ;)

Im 100% Barney Gumble - the type that likes to drink the aircraft dry then behave like a drunked bafoon until disembarkation.

Depends on the flight, recent trip in first on the A380 I'm a Marge. :)

Other times on a routine domestic run I can be a Lisa.

Like any type of attempt at stereotyping it is situational.

Geez this is a tough one.

Like many, I don't fall into one category, and without revealing how they created the categories I probably can't give which one I am most dominant in.

I like air travel a lot so I guess you can call me a Marge (but as The Simpsons has progressed over time, I fail to see Marge more and more as a positivist). Sometimes I prefer the destinations only and not the journey (not that I hate it, it's just not much to be overly excited about), so I guess that makes me a Lisa (but from what I pick up, Lisa wouldn't care about commenting on the journey).

In a sense, what's the difference between a Lisa and a Moe?

Also, we all have a bit of Homer in us:
  • Some of us like alcohol
  • Some of us will take anything if its free
  • When things go wrong, some of us will let the world know very well
  • Some of us are fat
  • Some of us will try to do the least possible to achieve the most, or if we're not happy with our working conditions, we just go in every day and do it really half-a*sed.
  • We've all thought, said or done before:
    • "Now why is <person> doing <task> where as I'm here using/doing <other task> like a sucker?"
    • "Woo hoo!"
    • "Do'h!"
    • "Aaaargh, cr*p!"
    • Danced a victory dance
    • "I've seen some [teams] suck before but they were the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked"
    • "What is mind? No matter. What is matter? Never mind."

I'm a Marg Simpson - love the romance of travel!

All of the above

29% 'Socialites', are Bart Simpsons. Typically they can't entertain themselves
> give me inflight stuff, give me games and entertain me now, oh and feed me that breaks up the trip - or maybe thats homer!

'Territorialists' at 26% are Mr Burns

> this space ... its mine.. cough in it and you will suffer! (actually that did happen with some guy hacking up his lungs at the height of the swine flu scare on the plane)

17% 'Disengaged Jaded Flyers'
> see that flight attendant .. shes off to dissapear - typical - grr

Lisa Simpson, or 'Cocooners', feel that the flight is a neccessary part of the trip but not the trip itself zone out and get there
> I bought my ipod, my book and I just found this amazing trivia! - are we there yet?

'The Positivists' or Marg Simpsons are planners and organisers, are typically fidgety, excited, and the flight is part of the holiday.
> this plane, it takes me to the most awesome places... I love it.. and my husband ...

and interestingly I can have the whole range in a 1 hour flight .. eek

I have no idea what you're talking about!

Let's get silly!!!!!!

I don't really fit into any category...

I'm not very chatty with fellow pax, but every so oftan...

There are some flights where I'm simply getting from A to B, and there are some flights where it's part of the experience

There are some flights where I want to be entertained, other flights I don't really care.

Most of my air travel is work related so then I would mostly be Lisa and occasionally Mr. Burns.

However holiday travel is a different matter and I would probably be Marg on those rare and happy trips!
