Mac Book Air. Cant fault them
Can run windows on Mac if u need using Paralles

Parallels performance is woeful though - run Parallels on my Quad core i7 iMac. It works, but beyond eTax and any minor work, it woeful. The phrase, "Runs like a two legged dog" comes to mind. You can also run Windows through Bootcamp - except on my iMac it seems without some very technical driver work. All reviews say it sucks down the juice.

Keep Windows for Windows, Mac for MacOS is my philosophy.

Thx medhead.

No worries. I certainly prefer the bigger screen on the MBP. But for travel the lower weight wins out. If I was travelling less than every week (say monthly) the pro might win.

I forgot to mention that the only problem with the MacBook is our incident reporting system only seems to work in Internet explorer via the VPN connection

Have used 11 inch MacBook Air for years - (converted most of my traveling colleagues) - running Bootcamp - not Parallels - very fast and reliable

Like Serfty I LOVE my netbook (an ASUS EEEPC) for travelling. No need for a separate harddrive, it's compact and fits perfectly in the upper section of my DSLR camera bag, have all my photo editing tools on there etc. Have a tablet and a laptop but leave both at home when travelling. The tablet is actually gathering dust since I don't use it for anything.

The only thing its probably not ideal for is ebook reading given screen height not that great, but I prefer printed books anyway so not a huge issue for me.

However, having said that my current one is getting a bit slow in the tooth and I am not really tech savvy so probably there have been advancements in leaps an bounds in other equipment types since I bought it. So will be checking what else is out there before my trip to Europe in August. So reading this thread with interest.

Upgraded from heavy old (2005!) Dell to a MacBook Pro.

The Mac is fantastic (and I'm no fanboy!!). So much easier to transport, simple, fast boot time and good battery life between charges.

+1 for Macbook Air. Converted over from previous Dell laptops this year, and i will never go back. 13" Air is just perfect for travelling. Fast boot time, stable, no overheating, long battery life.

I would equally say my one year old Toshiba Ultrabook (z830) has been bulletproof
(I will admit I am anti-Apple due to their closed shop proprietary ethos), albeit I do have a 3yrold ipod nano (the last one to work with nanopod explorer)

Do Mac Air and Macbook Pros overheat? My old Toshiba heats up and shuts down. :(

How old is the Toshiba? I know of a few people with 2009-2010 model Toshiba Portege laptops in which the fan has died multiple times. Once the fan is dead, the laptop rapidly overheats and shuts down to protect itself!

MacBook Pro/Air don't seem to have a reputation of overheating. I believe they use a combination of a (fairly large diameter) fan and the fact the aluminium body is a good heat sink - better than plastic anyway - to keep themselves cool.

Probably used a sleeve bearing fan rather than a ball bearing fan to save 10c, see a few tech companies go down that path and wonder why their customers in climates that have high variances in temps have seized fans.

I have both (both 2010 models). Have never had an issue, and I've used mine in some pretty toasty conditions.

The Macbook Pro is actually my main machine, both at home and at work (I don't like the corporate SOE so I use my own machine). It's subject to a fair bit of abuse and hasn't skipped a beat!

+1 for the Lenovo X series; I have the X220 but that would be superceded by the X230

SSD is a must.
I have both the 6 and 9 cell batteries, but I now only use the 6 cell.
Buy the Display Port to HDMI adaper/cable.
Purchase wth Win 7, if possible

My new MBP doesn't overheat and runs windows 8 (getting used to it) via bootcamp better than any windows machine I have ever owned.
Have to say it was excellent value compared to the win laptops at same price.

++1 for MBA.
I had a 4 year old Asus eee which I loved, but encouraged by my adult kids, I bought a 13 inch MBA in September.
I waited until DSE had one of its 10% discount sales then got the GST back on my way out of the country.
For Christmas I received a leather Sena folio case which is really classy (purchased from the on-line Apple store). It does make the whole thing a bit heavier than my previous neoprene sleeve but looks great and saves taking it in and out all the time. :D
