Which is the best suitcase/luggage?

Have to look out for a sale some time within the next 2.5 weeks then...:D
Wonder if the DJ sale is still on - some mates of mine went shopping there last week.

Just don't spend ages with a staff member at Myer/DJ's/Bag shop, then go and buy online for less. That's low, IMO (by all means check the bag out yourself at one of those shops though). :)
In my experience, that won't be a concern at Myer. Their staff in the luggage section really don't know much at all about the products, especially if you want to know how they are made etc. All they can do is show you how many zipers and compartments they have, and you can do that very easily by yourself.

Also note that when they have sales, get in early. They tend to sell out of the popular/models sizes quickly and you may be left with a selection of what everyone else didn't want. They can also be lod models, which is not necessarily a bad thing. In some cases the newer models are not made as well as the old ones - just cheaper to manufacture.

Pretty much guaranteed that DJ's and Myer will be having a sale at this time of year. I also concur with NM's comments about the knowledge of the staff and the ability of the popular sizes to go out the door quickly.

Yeah, I don't think I've paid "Retail" for a suitcase in absolutely ages. Always Myer or DJ's or similar on sale.

If not on sale, like posted elsewhere - Luggage Direct comes to mind. They've got a retail store in Brisbane if not comfterble with online purchases. Havn't visited them or ordered online but am always impressed with their prices.

Next time ;)

Oh and yep check out what you're after at a physical store then check with luggagedirect. Even when sales are on at the big store, I've sometimes seen cheaper there.

(And with that Antler 4 pack, I think I own the cabin roller in that pack. I paid about $100 for it alone :D . Generally pretty good. Super light, but the single handle does make movement tricky (esp backward) at times. )

I went to check out Myers and DJs earlier. I think I'm pretty confident in making a decision online now. But I forgot to ask whether the locks that come with the bags are TSA-approved. Might send the luggagedirect guys an email to make sure.

Cheers for the advice everyone. :)

It dies not really matter what brand suitcase you buy as the airlines and or ground staff will find some way of damaging it on its first flight. I have had expensive and cheap one and most often there is smoe damage from oil stains to zips and zip pullers being ripped off. What I do now is with buy a moderate 'LIGHT' case, due to the every tightening weight restrictions. I have had good experiences with suitcases form Strandbags. The have a good range and fast repair service. Also always something on special.

Well - my Antler suitcase set ought to be arriving from Luggage Direct today. Anxiously waiting...:)

I bought some Emminet luggage (made in Korea or Taiwan) in Singapore a while ago. This seems to have held up reasonably well to airline mishandling.

Just be aware the price of the luggage seems to bear no resemblance to how easy the airlines break it. The good stuff breaks just as quick as the cheap stuff so don't waste your money on name brands.

If any airline damages your luggage (even small stuff) and you report it they will fix it for free. The man at Sweeny's in Melb who does this for QF is really good. I also had a bag repaired by the CX people in Melb and this was OK too. Things like missing zip pulls, broken corners, etc are really easy to fix

That's a big call to make - AA pointed at their "we aint responsible for nuffink" sign when I pointed out the large crack around the wheel on mycase at JFK :(

My new somsonite is working ok - I dont mind the scratches - makes it look more like it belongs to a real road warrior ;)

Still cant't decide on my tumi hand luggage though ....

There is only one choice for me in luggage, Rimowa (RIMOWA : EVERY CASE TELLS A STORY.), German, aluminium or polymer, lightweight, unbreakable. The aluminium Lufthansa signiture edition stuff I have costs about $1500 for a Mobile office and Medium sized case in Germany and about three times as much here. The company that sells it here also sells Tumi (Hunt Leather in Melbourne and Sydney if you're interested), which is probably the only other that I would recommend.

Rimowa is a classic example of German engineering and design, and is without doubt the best luggage going around. If what's inside is important to you get the best you can afford, and always have TSA approved locks.

Can you give mrssimongr a call and explain that? We are experiencing some push back n Tumi 20in rollaboard at the moment that I need approval of before 30 June to allow for a tax deduction ;)

The irony is that if you forego the tax deduction and buy the luggage in the states you'll save more money.

Tell her if you don't buy it now it'll no doubt go up in price soon, and that ultimately it'll cost a lot less than if you had opted for the Samsonite ("shivers with dread"), as it'll last about ten years longer.

"It's O.K. dear I'll get the Samsonite, at that price I can buy a new one every year", and under his breath utters, will bloody well have to, as well.

Myer have a stockstake sale at the moment with 35% off all Antler and Samsonite travel goods.
MYER Catalogue

"Too late" she cried. In there yesterday- Melb store- buying big on crockery (how exciting  ) and pretty much bugger all left in the Samsonite hard case range/s. Some of the more demure looking 'soft' option/s left but they'll last about two seconds.
My Flite hardcase has been very poorly treated esp. by those folk at SIA but it still looks the goods. And easy to operate too, esp. when you get the signifcant other to do it :D

After trying them all, I have found Paklite to be the best all round. They are a well known Australian brand - with good quality and price.
The local Samsonite are just made in China with a Samsonite badge.
I have just used the Paklite AirPack cabin trolley bag for a Europe trip.
It has a mesh laundry bag and a wet pack for the small bottles of liquid.
It worked well - and no waiting for luggage.
Rather than black - this is a nice rust/terracotta - a bit different but not over the top.
I got mine at DJ's Sydney City. Airpak

Agree and have had the same problem. I did manage to get an acknowledgement (in writing) that they'd broken my bag and therefore managed a travel insurance claim. ;)

Same here. The damaged bags person should/will give you a standard form filled out (or partially filled out) denying liability if you ask for it.

I recommend one of those hard shell type cases, to limit airline damage. I bought (and recommend) AIRPORT luggage. Very exp. at retail shops, but I got a set of 3 for $200 via eBay. 'Luggage Direct' delivered them to me the day after purchase. Excellent service!

I am a Samsonite hard shell fan after 15 years of "trialling" different brands including Delsey etc, I also take a look at the crew bags on each flight to see what they are using, gives me a good guide as to what can handle the high loads!

Had a QF FF cabin bag for a while, not that impressed with it and it is difficult to fit into the overhead storage on the older Dash 8s, if not ipposible on the 200 series.
