Which is the best Airline to fly to Europe with.

In Y I would choose CX ,always found them good value for money with decent leg room,good food and attentive crew.in J I also like CX.
Have tried QF PE and it's pretty good,certainly better than the BA equivalent.

I would have thought this is an infinitely variable equation, taking into account certain factors, including (but not exclusively or in any strict order):
- class of travel
- product offering for class of travel
- price
- schedule
- final destination(s)
- alliances / loyalty programs / upgrade possibilities
- on time performance
- safety
- purpose of travel

The "weighting" each individual puts onto each factor is variable as well, by that individual, and with each trip.

There is no "best" airline, but "best" for an individual trip for any individual traveller.
 
Flying to Dublin I think only Etihad offers a 1-stop service from the east coast of Oz, so it'd have to rate highly for that route.

I'm surprised that anyone would choose CX in Y for a long haul flight. I've flown CX Y a few times now to HKG and I hate 'those' seats. You can't really recline and I've never slept. I've spoken to a few friends in the past about it and there seems to be goon consensus that the hard product in CX Y is appalling. Just an opinion.

+ 1. I did MEL-HKG-FCO return earlier this year in CX in Y and it was TORTURE in those seats. First time I had been in their new long haul Y and I hated it so much that I will now avoid CX other than for short hops in Asia or if I was flying J.

I hate them. I'm 6'5" and the overnight (dep 0030 arr 1000) DXB-HKG was hell, I could barely move at the other end. Compared to BNE-LAX on QF where it was fine. Shame as the rest of the flight (on time, good crew, quiet a/c on the A330).

They might be ok if you're 5'6", not 6'5".

I like QF/CX via SIN/HKG (ability to get to destination city with maybe only 1 change). At least from my previous experience anyway.
 
To put the cat amongst the pigeons - my wife and I (sounds like royalty!!) flew from Mel via KL to STN with AirAsiaX this May/June for an all up cost of less than $2000 for the two of us. Inclusions were - reserved extended legroom seating (I am 6'4") and meals (basic but adequate). Agreed, it was a promo fare, but great value and very courteous service. The newly fitted recliner seating in economy is more than adequate and our only regret is that we were too slow to respond to an offer and missed out on an $300 per sector upgrade to premium seating.

Make that MEL via KL to STN and return via KL to MEL
 
Having only just returned 72 hours ago from Europe, this tread is timely. I was given the option of PE with QF or find a competitive J fare. I ended up booking J with AY and was very impressed. I flew CX from MEL-HKG, then AY onwards to HEL then onto FRA. On the way back it was AY to HEL-BKK, then BA to SYD. Considering I spend about $6K return with access to OW lounges, status credits etc, I thought it was great.

BTW, the service & food on the AY flight was wonderful. I was in the A340, so it was their slightly older style seat, but I still slept best on the AY legs.

So if I was to look again tomorrow, it would be hard to look past a OW-AY fare if the same type of specials were available!

Agree the AY option having experienced it twice in past 2 years. MEL-HKG with CX then AY/BA to LHR via HEL. Returning LHR - MEL with QF. All on an AY business class ticket at substantial saving. AY service food and cabin (A340) were all excellent and I will certainly do this again. BTW shower in HEL before last leg to LHR totally recommended.

It was for the return trip - a great deal I think you will agree. AirAsia has been voted the best LCC for 2009 and 2010. The promo deals appear regularly - good to subscribe to their mailing list and you usually receive 24 hour advance notice before the general public

For $500 each way, yes, that is a very good deal!

I'm flying KUL to STN return next july can you tell were the flights full? How long did you have to wait before they offered you the $300 upgrade? My flights work out to be $560 return from KUL.

In May/June the flight was at about 90% capacity to STN and 80-85% or so on the return.
Plenty of spare seats to shift to if required, but I can thoroughly recommend the fee payment for extra legroom in Y class.
However, be wary of the group of three seats on either side at the forward most point of the Y class (just behind the Premium/Y class bulkhead) the legroom is reduced considerably by the solid bulkhead in front of you (they are worse than standard seats in my humble opinion) and the window seats in each of these two groups are restricted in headroom by the curvature of the fuselage. We initially paid for and reserved these very seats, but were soon shifted to another position when this deficiency was pointed out to the crew. The centre group of seats in the same position is OK with ample legroom - they have a much greater setback from the bulkhead.

I seem to remember that the Premium upgrade offer happened sometime in March/April. As mentioned, we were not quick enough off the mark. We did speak with several groups of PAX who had upgraded using the deal and they were very satisfied.
