This thread prompted me to look through my photos...
There may be crowds but Santorini really is somewhere you have to see at least once. It's incredibly unique and beautiful.
I assume the cruise ship crowds are pretty much stuck in Fira? There's lots of other places to go. We hardly spent any time in Fira. Hire a quad bike or motorbike and explore!
Visit Sigalas winery, grab some bottles, then sit out here by your pool and have dinner... (and feed the cats)

On a cruise ship the crowds go to Fira, Oia, the Volcano and the beaches and wineries. It just gets crowded in Fira around 4pm as many ships depart around 5. But we noticed they are staggering departures these days. But you do have to get down to the old port to get back to the ship. Apparently that's a Union requirement to that port?

I rode one of those donkeys when I was 11 years old and it scarred me for life...
Hence your name?

As boomy and others alluded the answer for OP is really age and reqt related. We are late 50s and we both loved Santorini much more than Mykanos for views and restaurants etc. One of my sisters and her husband only 4yrs younger love Mykanos much more than Santorini because they are more into late night clubs etc.

Young'uns are definitely going to be more drawn to Ios etc - so many islands - such little time!

I got on one of those Donkeys a couple of years younger than 11 - loved it! It was a thousand times better than those Elephants I stupidly climbed on 35+ years later in Laos....

Just noticed this thread and loving the pics.
As a youth, having spent many a holiday legless on a beach I can certainly tell you which islands you don't want to visit swanning_it :p
