I'm going to be transitting for 5 or so hours on a domestic inter-Europe flight. Which would be the best airport to transit and would I have enough time to pop out of the airport to the city?

Frankfurt, LHR or Charles De Gaulle?

Thanks!

I found FRA to be a confusing building site when I was there.

If going via LHR T5 with lounge access I think that would be a pleasurable way to spend 5 hours...

you missed the point of the OP's question - would he have time to pop out and do things... FRA vs LHR?

I agree with you if you are a OW E - T5 lounges are some of the best in the world...in my humble opinion of course :)

A quick trip into FRA by train, time for lunch or dinner at a good eatery in the old town, and back to FRA ready for your next flight...

Mr!

Last month i had some hours to spend at CDG. Absolutely ghastly, I thought. Very very crowded, with too much of the inadequate space devoted to shops, and nowhere near enough to walkways or to seating at gates. The lounge which I used was very overcrowded. I had to sit on the floor. And forget about going into Paris, as it's too far out.

I also detest LHR if I have to change terminals. But T5 is very pleasant, and as others have said, the lounges there are excellent. Again, I wouldn't contemplate going into London, as you would no sooner get there than you would have to go back to the airport.

As for FRA, it's a long time since I used it, but my memory is of it being clean, efficient and spacious. I note thaough that a contrary view has been expressed, so I'm not sure.

Mr!

I took that to be a nice to have rather than a requirement ;)

I personally with only a 5 hour layover would not be planning my route round a day trip - in case anything went wrong...

I only have experience of FRA and I like the airport and with the attached trainstation, you'd definitely have time to pop into town for an hour or two. Based on what I've read here I don't think that'd be possible from LHR or CDG.

Quick search of the timetable suggests there are 5 trains an hour from the main train station (as opposed to the regional train station, which would be the suburban trains) and they take about 10 minutes to get to Frankfurt's main train station.

leaving airports with only 5 hrs to spare cant be quite dangerous. Train cancellations/delays, security delays etc! ive cut it quite short when ive left a few airports around the place!
out of your three choices like everyone else has said, if your flying OW and have lounge access, then T5 at LHR is great! T4..not too bad but not exciting. As for CDG, is not the nicest place to spend time between flights. FRA is prob the better choice if you do want to risk leaving the airport, but do give yourself plenty of time on the return trip. Getting through security can be ghastly during peak hrs!

Goodluck :)

Ze German Trains DO NOT have delays! ;):D

Too bad you do not have AMS as an option. I would pick that.

funkyr, you don't have much time to leave and be sure to get back as long into city takes at least 50mins one way.

I agree just go to T5 south and relax and enjoy the great choice of food and drink.

Of the three suggested FRA would be my choice. Trains+teutonic efficiency always works!

But I would also consider ZCH with that huge underground shopping mall downstairs. There is even a Lindt and Sprungli restaurant down there!

Here's an interesting one for you. Just booked a FF ticket AUH-LHR-DUB-AUH. Taxes were $84.

If I'd booked AUH-LHR-AUH, taxes would have been $250.

You can work that one out for yourselves...
