I have a three week trip away coming up, and will have a hefty checked luggage on the way back to Tullamarine ( two pax ).

So, I was looking at driving to Melbourne from Sydney ( and return ).

Long Term parking in a paid facility will be about $150 - 200.

Does anyone have experience / advice, about FREE parking reasonably close ( then get a cab in ) ??

Eg. When at Sydney Domestic, I park a few streets away in Mascot, and walk the 500 - 700 metres in.

I notice that on Melrose Drive outside United Airport Parking there is unrestricted parking. Not sure how easy it is to get a sport there. You could then pretend you're staying at the Mantra and get the United bus to the airport for free.

Oh no it will be completely safe abandoned in a random tullamarine st for weeks..... :shock:

Park at a friends house near Tullamarine and get them to drive you? One never gets something for nothing - and the theft or tow away issue could be relevant

I am GM for one of the two off-airport parking operators located on Western Ave. Since 31 October a total of 5 break-ins/burglaries have taken place in neighbouring businesses. This is in Western Ave alone, a relatively busy street with good patrols by police. Many Tullamarine streets are popular with hooning & drag racing, & I've seen first hand the damage done to parked cars when they lose control. To park 2-3 weeks on any street is really pushing the envelope, but in an area where it is clearly unsafe is simply asking for trouble.

I was amazed that anyone would park on the street for 3 weeks . Unless the car isn't worth stealing

Thanks for the responses ...

I'm surprised that nobody does this.

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough ...

I mean, to park for free in a ( relatively ) SAFE location, even if it it's some several kms away.

I thought there may a residential area not too far away, where you could find unrerstricted parking.

I once parked for five days in a residential street at Mascot ( and walked in to Domestic ). I gave the local police a call, to say I have parked it there ... should anyone report a sus car etc.

Sure, there's a risk, but I've had my car damaged in 'paid parking' before .... and you know what those signs say ( upon entry ) .... NO RESPONSIBILITY ACCEPTED !!

Sorry, not being helpful to the OP ... but my experience. Did exactly the same thing a km or so from Perth domestic ... Selected location very carefully, under a light in a residential area, but on a moderately busy street. No contra signs. Got a cab to the airport, pleased with saving a few bucks.

Came back 2 weeks later and ... gone!

Went to nearest police station to report theft. When I described car and location, the constable behind the counter grinned. "We were wondering when you would come back!". It was reported as 'abandoned' and towed to police yard a few suburbs away.

Not a cheap option, as it turned out. But letting police know in advance as you did may have fixed that issue.

Be careful, it's not always theft but also damage from residents you need to worry about. I've seen more than a few cars coated in eggs etc. in Mascot streets.
For residents unhappy about others parking in their streets, I'm sure it's obvious when a car has been parked their by a traveller.

Tullamarine is not the safest of suburbs, I would not park my car in that area for more then a day or two.
We are quite lucky in MEL with very reasonable airport parking rates at the long term car park, especially if booked online in advance.

I am reasonably familiar with this general vicinity, having worked round there some years back; and I agree totally with the general sentiment here, there is nowhere at all I would leave a car unattended for any length of time.

So ahh... about those AFF mates rates....

An AFF user/member discount is in fact available however in order for the promotion code to be published we would ask that Australian Frequent Flyer follow us on Twitter at @ eliteairpark. Once followed we will tweet the code which will then be distributed to all AFF Twitter followers, saving you 15% on your airport parking ongoing provided that the length of stay is a minimum of 4 calendar days. Thanks ... Elite Airport Parking

Ok, that's enough for me then ...

I get the point.

Thanks for clearing this up in my mind. I'll look at my other options ( including paying the current high price for SYD - MEL / return airfares etc. )

FYI....another option I have used besides:

* Pay Parking
* Friend/relative dropping off
* Public Transport

Is renting a car to the airport (pick up in suburb and drop off at airport). There are often very low promo and corporate rates available. Sometimes this has only cost about $20/30.

Wouldn't driving to from Mel cost more than the airfare?
