Well, after looking 'hard' ...

I've found legit long term parking ( with free shuttle to Melbourne International ) for $106. for 23 days.

*** Cheaper to fly SYD - MEL / Return ?

No, not really. Flying Business all through our trip, and have up to 40kg luggage allowance.
How to get this on a Domestic flight ? PAY FOR IT ...
Current cost of airfares with 35 - 40 kg. checked luggage = around $500. for the two of us.
( We won't mind the drive ... )

My immediate thought was exactly the same. I suspect there are more people who do NOT use twitter than do and yet we are so easily forgotten !!
Amen brother ........ or sister - I do not even know how to spell coughter or Bookface let alone use them!

clazman - illegal advertising - yes always (also handy for us to "report a post" if you believe it fails to meet the T&C's). We then investigate. Commercial posts are against the T&C's. For this one, it has been re-posted to the particular Form where it belongs.

It was interesting to read the reports on TripAdvisor ( regarding Long Term Parking near Tullamarine ).

I was nearly going to book with one of the companies mentioned.

A small number of operators do have poor reputations which can easily be uncovered by doing a simple Google search with the name of the operator and "reviews"; they will speak for themselves. Always choose a reputable and reliable operator, not necessarily the cheapest. The saying "you get what you pay for" is as relevant in this industry as it is in any other. If in doubt contact the business by phone and ask lots of questions; you'll get a good idea from the way your enquiries are handled about what level of service you'll receive if you parked with them. If close enough, drive to the facility unannounced and ask to be shown or inspect the facility; a reputable operator will have nothing to hide and should be able to show you through.

One 'report' I read, stated the operators claimed they needed to 'move' the vehicle for "operational' reasons.

They even claimed they needed to put a dollar figure of fuel in the car.

The owner believes the vehicle had an additional 100kms plus on the clock afterwards !!

What protection is there from attendants taking your car for 'a spin' ???

Good points and a good question. I should point out that some (and I emphasise some) reports and reviews can be exaggerated and over embellished and one has to take a few with a grain of salt. However, to answer this as best I can all valet park operators will take your keys (as we do) and will undoubtedly have something in their terms & conditions stating that they have permission to move your car. This is a broad term and used to cover several circumstances, such as if you've requested a car wash or offsite car service, in the event of fire and any movement that occurs as part of the business's ordinary day-to-day operations ... e.g. most off airport car parks operate with cars parked in date order of return and on a rotation, so the closer the return date gets the nearer the car gets to be accessed easily. If you parked with us for 3 weeks your car would be moved 3 times in that period, once from the check-in area where you park it to a long stay area, again from the long stay area to "ready" area the day prior to return and if indoor, finally from "ready" to our waiting area which only occurs once the customer has called from the airport.

Regarding having to to put fuel into a car, I have never experienced this, however, it isn't unusual for customers to drop their vehicles off with fuel warning lights on and the tank near empty.

The issue of extra kilometres on a car or staff taking a car for a spin really comes down to the staff that are employed, what kind of checks that are done on them and the culture of the business. To put it simply, there is absolutely no way a business that tolerated these things would remain in business very long. Even just a one off occurence would have such a negative impact, especially in the realms of social media, I doubt a business could survive it. At the end of the day a "spin" is actually a criminal act and I would treat it as such. A reputable facility should have 24 hour CCTV surveillance with continuous digital recording that cannot be tampered with, and staff are generally aware of this and their unlikelihood of not being caught. I am happy to state that all of my staff treat every customer vehicle with the same level of care and attention with which they treat their own. While instances like these may well have occurred, I have been in operations or general management in the industry for close to 12 years and have never experienced it, nor had to worry that I might.

Look at it from this perspective. The ATO allow around 0.70 cents per km to reimburse for car ownership and running costs so you can work out what 1400km is worth, and that's on top of your time !!

We all place value on different things.

I also find a long drive therapeutic.

While I like a drive and often hire a car for the 3 hr drive from SYD to my home in CBR, I don't think I would be so keen on a 9hr drive to SYD after arriving at MEL even in J class.

Taking a photograph of the odometer with something in it that proves date & time. Then if they take it for a spin, rather than just moving it - you have them on toast.

I think we are all minded to prevent it from happening altogether, so my advice would be if you do something like this don't make a secret of it; do it in full view of the car park staff, a bus driver, anyone who works there will do and, don't worry, as soon as they see a camera/smartphone being held up towards the instrument cluster they'll know exactly what you are doing and word will spread to the rest of the staff before you even get on the bus. Once the photo is taken, show whoever is checking you in and ask that the odometer reading be entered somewhere on your contract, booking or check-in form. Any reputable operator should have no hesitation in obliging. At Elite we now have express check-in via a handheld tablet all done at your car, you don't even have to enter the office unless you want to, and there is a section where mileage can be recorded (screenshot example below). It also allows for staff to photograph any pre-existing damage on the car via the tablet's camera which are then uploaded and stored electronically against the customer's booking.

We used an off-airport parking operator with shuttle bus recently after searching online for the cheapest. It was $72 for 13 days. All good (and safe).
