Mr Timtammi and I just returned from a trip to Bangkok and QF have stiffed us on our points and status credits saying that our 3K operated QF codeshare flights from SIN-BKK are not eligible as they are booked into the wrong class.

Maybe I have had my head in the sand, and I know there have been lots of changes recently, but I was of the belief (wrong it seems) that if you booked it as a codeshare you got the points and status credits as if it was a Qantas operated flight. That is what the Ts and Cs say. But apparently there is a completely separate page in the Ts and Cs (not cross referenced by the way) that gets them off the hook if the class isn't right.

But the thing is, I cant even find out what class the tickets booked into! I just checked my eticket and it just says Economy restricted. We were able to put in for upgrades on the SYD-SIN leg, and we were aware that we were actually flying 3K from SIN to BKK but thought as we booked it all as one ticket and that leg was a codeshare on QF4212 that we would get the points/SC.

How do I check what class the ticket was in? I reckon this is not fair by the way, having a blanket statement on one page with a tick box option for partner airlines that indicates which ones offer codeshare and then a note at the bottom that says that if you book the codeshare you get the points and status credits WITHOUT any caveats that say but only for certain classes is misleading in my book.

My understanding was that QF code = full points / credits as if it were a QF flight.

Well that's what we thought too but he spent 40 mins on the phone to the call centre and got nowhere. The first rep kept on putting him on hold to check with a supervisor and then coming back and trying to argue points that were not relevant to the case. Eventually he asked for the call to be escalated to someone else who understood the rules and that is when we were directed to the page that says only certain classes.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Sadly no as i found out the hard way with an HNL-MEL JQi operated flight with a QF flight number going back to when they first started operating to Hawaii.

These are the only QF flight numbers for travel in revenue class that are not eligible.

Not on Jetstar airlines. A trap lays in wait in the earnings tables.
* Qantas Points and Status Credits are not earned on Qantas Codeshare flights (ie with a QF flight number) operated by Jetstar Airline other than in booking classes of Y B H K or L (earn in L class is eligible only when travelling on a oneworld fare product)

I'd say that it is the following footnote from the Airline Earning Table that you have fallen foul of:

Qantas Points and Status Credits are not earned on Qantas Codeshare flights (ie with a QF flight number) operated by Jetstar Airline other than in booking classes of Y B H K or L (earn in L class is eligible only when travelling on a oneworld fare product)

Since you were booked into Economy Restricted, my guess is that your fare bucket was not one of those listed above.

I agree that it sucks though. A QF code should give you the full monty especially as they often cost more.

Yes that is the bit that tripped us up. I had only read the page dedicated to codeshare earning that had 3K in the list of those offering qf codeshare with the note at the bottom specifically saying you earn as per qf. As I said no caveats or another asterisk or link to that other page. Had we known we probably just would have booked with 3k. It's not a lot of points or status credits but it's the principle. Hopefully this post will help someone else avoid the same fate. . However the question remains how do I check what class I'm booked in?
If they are going to exempt earning on certain classes surely I should be able to check what class I'm booked in?

You are generally able to check your fare class on the QF MMB page if you still have sectors active on your booking.

but you can't check the fare bucket before you pay, unless you install serfty's Fare Buckets script for Greasemonkey.

Or to do it manually, when you get to the Check page (after you have selected your flights), right-click -> view page source and search for "classes".

But yes, it's annoying QF doesn't just display the fare bucket outright on the page.

Not on Jetstar airlines. A trap lays in wait in the earnings tables.

It is hardly a trap. When booking if you on the fare conditions (you do do that don't you?), it quite clearly states what the earn will be.

For starter fares is says that:

Qantas Points and Status credits are not earned when travelling on Starter fares.

And for Max fares:

For travel on and from 01 July 2014
Qantas Points and Status Credits may be earned on this fare. This fare is classed as Flexible Economy for the purposes of calculating how many Qantas Points and Status credits you earn.
When points are earned on this fare, a Minimum Points Guarantee applies.

Ignorance doesn't mean it is a trap.

Exercise for the reader. Go to Qantas.com. Choose one way sydney - Bangkok for Thursday 20 November. Choose the option QF35 followed by QF4212. From what is presented, can you tell whether QF4212 will give status credits and points or not?

No breakdown for the two sectors, but the "check" page says "Qantas Frequent Flyers will earn 4750 points and 55 status credits for this booking." Seems clear to me.

It doesn't say you will. It says you could. Problem is, you won't. If you choose saver, it is more than likely 'S' class, and you'll be stiffed.

Flew MEL-SIN(QF) and SIN-BKK (3K) the other day on same PNR. Knew 3K was going to be a non-earner when it came up as an alternative to QF23 when I booked it online. Can't remember how I knew. But def read it somewhere.

I was just happy knowing that they would check luggage all the way through, and let me into the SIN lounge (as QP). Either you put up with less these days on QF or stop flying them (currently on that trajectory).

And actually it was a much more pleasant experience all round than the horrible "re-timed" early morning MEL-SYD transit to QF23 via the terminal bus.

Quite correct. The word is "could". I stand corrected. Thanks woodborer.
It still leave the problem of the actual class of travel being unavailable on the Qantas booking site, despite ajw373's smarmy unhelpful reply telling me how to use the Jetstar site.

You do realise they used the qantas website to book this, not the jetstar website? There are no starter or max headings on the qantas website. But thanks for the information. I'm sure it might be helpful to someone, one day.

Yep - the only indication that one might not earn points is the word "may" as indicated in the "Sale Conditions" one must agree to before booking: (http://www.qantas.com.au/regions/amadeus/minirules/AUAISALE/)

Qantas Frequent Flyer
  • Qantas Points and Status credits may be earned on this fare and will be calculated on each Segment. For more information check the Airline Earning Table.

The underlying fare class is indeed available - here's some results for a one-way in November using the script: (Shame one needs to dig for it.)

Thanks for everyone's input. The thing that really annoys me is that I am a careful and detail oriented person and I really thought we would earn points and status credits based on this Frequent Flyer - Flying Qantas and Partner Airlines - Flying with Partner Airlines - Earning Qantas Points where there is a tick indicating you can book the code share and the + next to that leads to the fine print at the bottom which states
+ Selected flights operated by Qantas Frequent Flyer partner airlines also offer the option of a Qantas (QF) flight number. When booking a QF flight number, members earn Qantas Points and Status Credits at the Qantas rate.
There is absolutely NO CAVEAT there and no exceptions indicated or a link to further exclusions. This is what I think is misleading as I relied on that given I already thought I knew that if booked as code share you got the bennies and that seemed to confirm it for me.
I only found out we would not get them when they posted as 0. But now that I flown all sectors I cant seem to confirm what class it DID book into. My eticket doesnt say it, checkmytrip still has the PNR but it doesn't say and its not in MMB anymore. How on earth is the average flyer supposed to figure all of this out? The answer is obviously they aren't and I guess QF don't want them to. If that's no misleading I dont know what is.

I don't know if this is part of the "simpler and fairer" changes or not but "simpler and fairer" has to go down in history as one of the most ridiculous marketing slogans ever. They couldn't have made it more complicated or more unfair if they tried... well... maybe they did try. :(
