That is awesome! We might fly BNE-MEL (deliver the kids to my mother) and then on to the US! That would be cheaper than paying the unaccompanied minor component if we send them to her. What a mine of brilliant ideas AFF is. Thanks Mattg.

FWIW, MEL-BNE-LAX return on VA is around $30 more than BNE-LAX return.

VA even allow a free stopover in Brisbane. So you could fly MEL-BNE, stop for a week, then fly BNE-LAX. Return LAX-BNE only. The cost for that is $20 more than BNE-LAX return.

Don't forget about family pooling ;)

Don't forget about family pooling ;)

We are already doing that. My husband is the main traveller for business (he's self employed now but used to travel with VA for work) so we have been pooling since it's inception. He's 40 SC away from gold but still to get his 4 eligible sectors. He took his free return trip that comes with the Velocity Amex this week. I knew it wouldn't give points or SC but had hoped it would count towards the eligible sectors. He will still manage it by the end of May though. I reckon there must be a few gold VA members around thanks to family pooling.

Then transfer to a domestic flight to Brisbane to get home to 2 small children. I could not be bothered. The flying time isn't the issue it's the recovery afterwards. I like to return from holidays feeling rested and I know I will feel yuck. Worst case scenario we can change dates to a more civilised time and visit family or friends as part of the same holiday.
So you wouldn't be interested in CNX-BKK-SIN-MNL-SYD-BNE with 2 red-eyes (one night sleep in airport and one night sleep on board flight) and going to work next day?

It's really not that difficult.

I doubt it somehow.
I wouldn't be remotely interested in that either as I doubt I could be remotely functional at work the next day.
In my line of work that could have catastrophic consequences :(

Understood for your line of work.

For the rest of us you as a doctor should know it's all in the mind. If you think you can't do it then you won't be able to do it. But if you know you can do it then....

It's actually not all 'in the mind'. Sleep deprivation can have serious consequences when driving for example. You may think you're ok to drive, but you are putting the lives of other road users at risk. Fine if you're getting a cab home from the airport :)

I think I'll give it a miss too. I wouldn't want to kill a patient either. You must have a lovely desk job that you can nap at. Or a tiny sleep requirement. I don't envy that kind of travel. I'll stick to being a leisure traveller thanks. My work travel is about 20 minutes in the car.

I think by now I know exactly what I am capable of achieving? But let's leave it at that as it would appear people love to place limitations on what is possible. e.g. Can't sleep in economy, can't connect home via another airport, can't play golf on 1 hours sleep etc etc.

We are not all the same. I am a stubborn old man. YMMV.
