It's been said often and it's certainly true in my case that we tend to take things for granted. We can become so absorbed in the details of the minutiae of service onboard without realizing quite how special things truly are. Every once in a while it's nice to get a little jolt back to reality.
That jolt happened to me a couple of days ago and I'd like to share it with you.
I was flying DFW-HNL on AA (6th sector of a big QF SC run). I boarded a little bit late as I wanted to have a quick shower at the AC at A23. I was sitting in 3A (B763) and there was an elderly lady ~ late 70's sitting in 3B. It became apparent pretty quickly that she was travelling with a friend sitting across the aisle. They were both retired high school teachers going on a re-union with friends to Hawaii. I was very surprised (and pleased) that neither of them asked me to swap. This had happened on several previous sectors. My seat buddy asked me if I'd ever travelled "First Class" and stated that despite flying AA for years she never had but had used miles to upgrade herself and her friend from coach. She asked if I could fill her in on the protocols if there were any. Assuring her that there weren't any we departed. During the flight we chatted a little between service and during the meal. I helped both her and her friend with the Samsung tablets and the seat controls. They were both delighted and pretty amazed at the quality of the service and food, especially the Sundae.
It was truly lovely to experience AA First Class through the eyes of another.
Love it when you get a great seat buddy, one of the joys of travel
