When does Brisbane get A380

Driving past the Brisbane International terminal I notice that they now have a gate with aerobridges which appear to be A380 capable.

Is it wishful thinking on the part of BAC or are they likely to see any A380 services?

I was thinking in the interim it provides backup in the event of an A388 is diverted to BNE.

Any clues?

EK recently built a new lounge at BNE International terminal that has direct access to the A380-ready gate. EK has indicated their intention to operate A380 into BNE. Not sure on the timing.

I've heard nothing, I certainly can't think of any services be they LAX/SIN/HKG that would require the of an A380 ex BNE.

I dare say its a combination of equipment upgrade and being capable of taking diversions in an emergency.

Could be wrong, but just can't see it myself.

Emirates were planning to be the first, but presume it's been delayed due to G.F.C

They even have a walkway from their lounge straight to the A380 gate.

I can't see Qantas flying A380 into Brisbane in the near future, and Singapore would be unlikely, but more possible than Qantas.

The only way I would have thought SQ would consider it would be to cut their 3x daily service down to twice daily, though having said that, they've been getting such good loadings on them that perhaps they could sustain one on 380 metal.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking they might end up doing... although they are well spaced out timewise at the moment, and not sure they'd cut one.

I'm sure that I read somewhere that they were constructing two A380-ready gates. Can't find it quickly, but I'm sure that was the case.
Hell of a lot to shell out if there was no prospect of them being used.

TG, was it my imagination or was one of the 3x daily SIN-BNE not cut recently (though looking now, there's definitely 3 on the timetable)? I'm sure when I was looking at some flights that one of them had been removed from the schedule.

[EDIT] Found the link - apparently it's one gate capable of servicing 2 A380s at once
http://www.bne.com.au/major-project...-terminal/new-international-terminal-features
or servicing 4 smaller aircraft at once - a bit of hedging their bets going on?

Ok thanks guys, didn't think there was anything announced.

For Emirates to build what they have, they must have made some commitment to BAC.

I Auckland that terminal where the EK A380 was sitting seems to have been a relatively new extension also.

I thought I saw similar A380 gate in ADL last time I landed there??
Doesn't mean its coming any time soon though...

It is in the master plan for ADL but they're not expecting it soon. I think they were basing it on maybe 3 a week by 2030 :?: I guess it's all a lot of required forward planning but as an end-user it's not worth waiting out for. Still they need the gates before having them scheduled.

I think in Adelaide's case it's called wishful thinking not forward planning.

I talked to a QF person at a travel expo booth in Jan or Feb this year, and asked when QF would be flying PE BNE-LAX. He told me "when we start flying the A380 out of Brisbane later this year", or something to that effect. But I guess then the GFC got into full swing, I haven't seen BNE mentioned in QF's A380 schedule ... yet ...
Though my SIL got to do a joy flight on the A380 last year ex-BNE, when QF was doing all the promo work for the A380 launch.

I imagine that BNE will see regular 388 services once the airlines can be assured of selling a sufficient number of the F 'suites' installed on each aircraft to the passengers who use BNE airport.

I guess that is another issue. There is no "F" lounge at BNE - the SQ and QF lounges are just OK rather than sumptuous (I haven't seen the EK lounge), so the people wanting to spend their $$$ on a First Class experience would be a little disappointed when starting out from BNE.

Is that lounge to the left as you walk to the main desk at the International "just" a business lounge then? I've seen the door open once or twice, but have never been flying the right class or had sufficient status to find out what's behind the unmarked door ...

(Assuming you're talking about the Qantas Club)
At the reception desk, the sliding door to the left goes to the "First" lounge, and you go straight ahead for the "Business" lounge. However, the First lounge is very similar to the Business Lounge with only very subtle differences (different plates being one of the major ones!). Also, the Business Lounge has a better view (People watching is fun!).

Most major airports are making themselves A380 ready. Brisbane and Adelaide are both diversion airports for MEL and SYD so eventually A380's will be diverted to these airports with 3 major carriers flying them here and they will want to be able to handle this. They also have to be ready for possible equipment changes especially as more A380's enter the fleets as well as the possibility of scheduled services which is conceivable into BNE one day. QF BNE-LAX? Sounds unlikely until they have a lot more A380's in service and the demand in genuinely there.

I'm sure BNE is not too far away?

It was a pretty amazing site the other day driving past SYD airport seeing 3 380's all at once (EK & SQ parked over near the tower and QF at a gate).

Is there any other airport in the world where 3 of these babies intersect?

QF has been selling PE on QF15/16 BNE-LAX-BNE for some time now. However, since the "2-class" 747-400 aircraft do not have PE seats installed, the PE passengers get to sit in Skybeds on the lower deck (with PE service).

I am in this lounge now. Its more an Emerald Lounge than a First Class lounge. It certainly is quieter than the Business Class lounge. Only six other people using the lounge at the moment. But no view worth mentioning and the food offering at the moment is somewhat poor. But the Moet is cold.
