What's your Uber experience?

I only report what drivers tell me - DiDi is only app that drivers can see details of requested trip - Uber drivers must be Plat or Dia before they see direction and time duration of trip

Flt to ADL so delayed today I have cancelled and heading home - Uber offer:

And DiDi:

Edit: Final cost:

And as a result taking 2 trips in a week I earns 30% disc on upcoming trip:

Now seriously if DiDi in your area then Uber is for mugs

I think you are misunderstanding, I don’t begrudge the consumer going for the cheapest option. Why wouldn’t you? What I’m challenging is the incorrect notion that the drivers are getting more. They aren’t and the post #1370 you bring up is the perfect example.

DiDi fare was $62.60. Driver keeps 94.5% = $59.16
Uber fare was $81.14. Driver keeps 72.5% = $58.83

So they get 33c more on a trip that is probably 5x the average fare. Of course there are probably close to $10 of tolls included in those prices which will reduce that 33c to maybe 25c.

Yeah, DiDi drivers are getting heaps more!

One factor that may tilt things in DiDi's favour, for drivers, is the possibility of higher utilisation. If DiDi is paying the driver the same, but charging customers 23% less, this may drive additional demand that increases utilisation for the driver (i.e. cause people to take trips they might not otherwise take or use other means of transport).

Getting tired of the vile sickly sweet air freshener smell in Uber’s. Gives me a headache

Yes. By the time I arrive at a restaurant my head is splitting, nose running and throat closed up. Great way to start the evening.

DiDi driver I am with right now tells me DiDi are circling Uber Australian ops same like they did in China. Any validity? Time will tell.

Same driver also tells me absolutely never takes an Uber job now unless nothing coming through from DiDi or Ola - extra significant financial incentives daily from both companies if driver completes certain amount of jobs

I've been doing a lot of comparison between Uber and Ola in Adelaide lately and Ola is nearly always $2-3 more expensive on a less than $20 trip

Seems unlikely. Didi was a major player in the Chinese market, so Uber effectively gave up after but in return got bought out with a lot of valuable capital, and also has a close to 20% share of the didi venture in China. Here, Uber is easily dominant, and actually profitable, so there's no reason for them to quit.

That's true - but it's only due to the dominance of uber here.

And didi is not of its own any more 'altruistic' than uber. After didi took control in China and uber departed, two things happened:
1) availability of vehicles went down
2) prices for consumers rose a lot

This was due to didi getting rid of the discounts for consumers, and also the bonuses for drivers, since they were no longer needed.

Basically, the above benefits you point out only come due to competition in our market, not because didi is a more generous company. (Pretty much the same as when uber arrived and had discounts and bonuses for all and sundry as it tried to gain popularity against taxis).

A couple of nights ago when we got off the aircraft in ADL, uber was quoting $28.xx for our ride home. By the time we arrived at the baggage carousel the price had gone to $31.xx. After collecting our luggage the fare had jumped to $85.43!!
We jumped into a cab and got home for $46.90.

Today's Uber experience in India was the worst I've ever had.

I was trying to get to Jaipur Airport from the city centre. The guy showed up, but for some reason he was getting an error message in the Uber app and it wouldn't let him start the journey. The error message was in Hindi and the driver spoke very little English, so I don't know what the problem was, but after 5 minutes of trying together to troubleshoot I was left with no choice but to cancel the ride. I still needed to get to the airport, and was now in quite a hurry so I (perhaps naïvely) told the driver I'd pay him cash if he wanted to just drive me to the airport. He agreed and we set off towards the airport.

Towards the end of the journey, my driver got pulled over by a policeman for running a red light. The policeman asked to see the driver's licence and it turns out that he didn't have one! This was followed by a very lively 5-minute discussion which, sadly, I didn't understand as it was in Hindi. The driver seemed to be begging the policeman to let him off. The conversation ended with the driver slipping 100 rupees to the policeman, and we were miraculously allowed to go.

I did make it to the airport in one piece, and paid the driver in cash as promised. Not sure what to make of it all, and I can't rate the driver in the Uber app because I had cancelled the ride.

Shouldn't Ola be preferred in India?

I actually tried using Ola first, but the guy drove in the opposite direction away from my hotel for 5 minutes so I cancelled and went to Uber.

In general, yes, Ola is probably better but there are two problems with using it in India. Firstly, payment can only be made with cash. Secondly, you have to enter a one-time PIN at the start of every ride which I wouldn't be able to receive if not in wifi range. If you have cash and a local SIM card, then obviously yes, Ola is better.

Why go direct when....
Oh forget it. 🤣

Booked a short trip ($9 something) in Adelaide CBD. Uber map has consistently shown the wrong way to my pick-up point (through a car park!) previously so I gave the driver precise SMS instructions x 4. Driver chose to ignore me and went to the wrong street three times driving around and around expecting a different outcome each time. Two minute wait sit for ride became 11 minutes. Driver didn’t pick up my calls. Then I got charged a $5.62 wait fee.
