the weight was the main contingency in my decision to get the dell xps 13. it comes out at 1.2kg. every gram matters.
I have an XPS 13 which is great. I also use the Duet display app - can use my iPad Mini as a second screen. Doesn't sound much as a second screen, but when you only have a 13" primary screen, any additional real estate is useful, particularly when working on two documents.
If you are a glutton for punishment you can even use your iPhone as second screen :)

I have a 2 year old Toshiba Kirabook. It is light, durable, SSD so boots up quick and has excellent battery life - that is all I ask. Weighs about 1.3kg.

I used my spectre x2 last night as a tablet and I was really surprised how much I liked it. Very functional however when I first turned it on, there was a loud whirring sound (a bit like a crook hard drive spinning). I turned it off and then on again and the noise was gone. That bothers me a bit. Any ideas? I thought this one was all solid state and no fan. I might have to look a bit closer at the spec to see what might have made the noise.

Cooling fan rubbing. Take it back if it happens again. It'll drive you nuts.

I have an older 13.3" Asus. i5 Quad core processor and 512Gb HDD. Weight about 1.8kg.
I bought it for the claimed 10hrs battery life and it was pretty close. Has been a good laptop but I will never buy another Asus product. Their customer care is non-existent, their attitude woeful. Asus in Australia simply don't give a big rat's about their customers.

Looking for a new laptop again. I don't fancy or need a touchscreen, nor W10 but I guess I will be stuck with that. For me processor capability is important as is battery life and 500GB HDD.

I like the specs on the HP Spectre but both the kids HP's have had chip probs that HP knew about and never addressed in the market so I shy away from HP. One laptop the keyboard failed due to a known chip problem, I solved with addition of external bluetooth keyboard, the other the wireless function ceased so fitted a wireless nano-usb.

What is top of my list atm is the Acer S5, i7, 512gb ssd HDD, 3 USB (one is Type-C) and claimed 8hrs battery life. Not sure the weight but it feels pretty light.

i have an ACER s3 i7 processor, and it has been very reliable, altho my rough friend managed to break the USB port in his. It is heavier and larger than the DELL xps 13 and yet the screen is no larger. dell has very thin bezel. I use the dell for travel and the Acer is a bit underutilised given its quality. The Dell is undoubtedly more robust in external structure. charger is very light, also.

i have an ACER s3 i7 processor, ...

I misquoted model. Should be Acer Aspire S13 (something). I cannot find much info online but viewed instore recently. Might be the same one but I understood it was a recent model. Obviously more research required. Will look into the Dell also.

i didnt see anything immediately wrong with your specs. my s3 is probably four years old. it is a tedious business trying to compare apples to apples. i find the intel site very good for checking the processor. actually it is a bit like buying wine. it is a truthful market. if the price seems higher than you expect it is because of something like being the latest iteration of the processor. it is a job of work if you are even slightly obsessive ! My rule of thumb is that i want the latest iteration of the fastest processor. that is my base line. you have to have somewhere to start. then i start the other stuff. truth in pricing: exception is, of course, apple, which lives entirely in its own pricing universe

I have a Microsoft Surface 3, a basic machine but does all I need. However, I was in Beijing 4 weeks ago and with the restrictions I had varied connection to my server.
My son had download the VPN prior to meeting up with me, and he had no problem accessing the internet. I think it all depends on what you want. I have everything at my fingertips because after I access the server all my files/ Microsoft office etc are there. If you don't have access to a server for example, you may need a faster processor to cope with Microsoft Office etc installed on your laptop.. I have never used a Mac for travel but have heard positive things. Hard decision to make.

Before my surface I had a Lenovo Windows tablet. I loved the device but there was a problem with the 3G connectivity. I jumped through multiple hoops for nearly a year with Lenovo intent on my giving up the ghost. I ended up finally getting a replacement which I promptly eBayed and bought a surface & haven't looked back.

Moral of the story I won't buy from anyone other than Microsoft and Apple. They have shopfronts where they can help you and are great with their returns policy. Sure it costs more but I've learnt you get what you pay for.

Interestingly albyd, whilst waiting at the Sydney Asus "service" centre to be attended all the other people also waiting some sort of satisfaction all shared with me their tales of woe, repeat returns, product not repaired or replaced under warranty and now warranty expired being given the bums rush, etc. Sample group was only 3 but all had same stories of poor customer commitment.
Understand what you say about shopfronts.
Apologies for taking thread OT.

Interesting also to hear members list of must have's in a travel laptop. For instance if the weight of 15" laptops came down sufficiently would you travel with one? I wouldn't as it is also about portability and 13"-14" seems ideal for me but others may have different ideas.

Have a look at the Dell outlet store. They sell refurbished/as new Latitude and XPS laptops for around 1/3rd of retail price. There is a good thread on Whirlpool called something like 'anyone brought a Dell refurbished' with a good bit of advice.

You should be able to get an i7, 500gb SSD and around 8hours battery for $1k.

this has been a very informative thread: here is the washout of my brain: 1. i need light weight. 2. i need best processor 2. i need ease of replacement parts. At the end of the day, weight matters a lot to me. you can buy very powerful puters for much less than i paid for this little darling dell xps with the high end choices. You might not have arthritis. You may be able to lug all this stuff but it causes me problems. If Electronic Arts actually made a decent version of Scrabble equal to that which is available on Microsoft, my life would be somewhat easier. My emergency thing could be a tablet but if Scrabble Worldwide (not the USA cough version) was actually good enough on anything else..well... i bought that kogan thing which is a cheapie 2 in 1 ...i can put the screen in backpack and the rest in checked luggage. You need to understand that my travelling companion needs to play scrabble and microsoft version is the only acceptable one..so we need emergency equipment

I use a Microsoft surface, does all the things I require for work, keyboard detaches to be used as a tablet, super light, and doesn't have to come out of my bag during airport security :)
Well, I just tried leaving the Spectre in my hand luggage at CNS DOM. "Sir, that laptop has to be removed for screening"!

This is going to be a case of some will, some won't - it depends on the device, the airport, the staff member making the call, the seasons, the position of the moon, the wind speed, etc. etc. etc.

Certainly, I haven't seen any signs at any checkpoints in the world that say something like "Please take all computers out, but tablets / iPads are just fine - leave them in your bag". I could be wrong on that, and there could be a checkpoint with that detail, but I have not seen it.

I've passed through a security screening point overseas where I accidentally left my laptop (not a small one, big normal one) in my bag, but no one said anything. I guess the security detail there are just for show, pumping out paycheques...

In many other checkpoints, my small 7" tablet had to come out.

As is the case in nearly all of the world, resistance is futile, so just do what they ask you to do. This is where having your device in an easy to reach and slipstreamed position is invaluable, so you don't need to stuff around as much. (A tough thing to do when it ends up buried underneath the bursting bag full of cables, peripheral devices, paperwork and gifts for your loved ones).

Yep, I think you may be correct anat0l! It's pretty easy just to whip out, so I'm not fussed one way or the other!

Agreed, no biggie to whip it out. Placed in top of the CB takes under 10 seconds.

OK, I'm pretty stoked with my selection. The Seagate wireless hard drive streamed seamlessly from my man bag in the overhead locker, but what really blew me away (others may know this, but I didn't), was that it streamed perfectly to multiple devices, but wait ... with different content, or the same movie but at different parts and each device could pause without effecting the other!

For a couple (or even a family), this means everyone can have IFE without a reliance on the carriers equipment actually working! Also without annoying interruptions of them trying to get you to hire a car etc etc.

The Spectre in tablet config. was not even blinked at by the JQ cabin crew, which means gate to gate, and I synced the wireless to both devices and Bluetooth headphones, in full view of them and nothing was said in the negative, in fact I think they were quite taken with the array of devices that I was mucking with (testing it all out ... thank God for a shadow).

As the headphones were paired to the tablet, it means everyone can have Bluetooth audio as well!

I'm a happy flyer again!

I have tried the 11 and 13 inch screens but my workflow is drastically less efficient than a 15 inch screen.

The 15in macbookrpro is only 0.7kg more than the 13in MacBookair so I use it for work and it's light enough to travel with.
The laptop has enough grunt and a great screen so I can get the travel pics quickly sorted in Adobe Lightroom before uploading to Flickr if good internet or backup drive if not.

Stayed at a Colorado VRBO property in January and the internet speed was 22mbps upload!!! Great for uploading 1.2gigs of travel photos

I find it easier to ask at the screening point. If laptop/tablet are required to be out, they come out on the tray. It seems frustratingly long for me to be on the other side whilst my belongings are passed thru screening a second time.

As for the devices, i use the MS Surface Pro 4. It's light yet powerful as a PC. I can easily connect to my office server. My Samsung tablet is also with me on trips.
