What's your drinking habit?

I like drinking red wine but recently I felt I need to control myself a bit more. Usually I drink 1.5 bottles to 2 bottles a week but do you guys think it is too much? According to the Australian Guideline it is recommended for 10 standard drinks (150ml 14.5%al = 1.6 standard drink) per week so I am slightly exceeded the limit (sometimes even more when having a wine gathering). I feel headache after the wine gathering all the time as I would have almost a bottle of Red or White wine on that night.

If you feel the need to cut back a bit, it’s probably a good idea, or at least to give cutting back a try. Not being judgmental in the slightest I hope you understand. Just that you probably are in the best position to get a sense of what works for you.

What @robbegong said sounds sensible, if you feel the need to control yourself - then you are the best judge and other peoples habits shouldn't really influence this.

We probably go through at least 1 or 2 bottles of wine on the weekend, but not uncommon that we try/taste anywhere between 6-15 in a given week.

Interestingly, I find myself wanting to drink very little at home by ourselves, it tends to be consumed with company or when we are out. In light of this, we (or I) tend to spit more often when we are drinking at home. Also, I can't get the impact on my calories or impairment of calorie burn out of my head after reading lightly about it :(

So depending on whether the consumption is hedonistic, which it kind of should be or if it is more intellectual (for lack of a better word), you could always just spit? In fact, if we could we would just buy half bottles of everything.

Thanks so much for your reply. I am actually referring to personal consumption of 1.5 to 2 bottles per week. A little bit more for whole family (I am the only one like drinking wines).

So far I have no health issue (as far as I know, in short term), just curious what’s the consumption of the others. My GP recommended max a bottle per week and with two days free of alcohol (can’t follow).

Compare to US, the Australian Guideline seems a bit tight.

I agree and fo try to have at least two alcohol free days per week. The rest of the week consumption depends on the day, health, mood, guests.

We always aim at 3-4 days a week without any booze but sometimes life throws stuff at ya and you just want a nice drink though 2-3 days it always is. Other nights we often share two bottles of wine between us too and on the weekends sometimes more.

But- we never get totally hammered beyond comprehension (at least not anymore, age changes things) unless we’re in Munich for Oktoberfest (can’t wait for the first trip in two years). And I vividly remember that during a school exchange with Toulouse in France decades ago, my host parents always and every night shared two bottles of red. Very well earning, smart and educated people (mum was a teacher and dad worked as an engineer at Airbus) who definitely had their life under control. This is just to say that it’s also a cultural thing and in my mind, there’s hardly anything better than a good drop in the company of good friends.

Been on hold with qantas for a combined 4 hours tonight thus far. Quite enjoying a bottle of Shiraz (which ironically came from qantas wine). At this stage, I’ll be three down before someone answers 🙄.

Don’t the doctors say that 1.5 bottles of red a day is good for your heart?

I think the Cape Town call centre may be on the Shiraz as well (or Pinotage)! Got the sectors changed, shows in manage my booking (the old and new), agent comes back and says “I’ll need to escalate to ticketing to be confirmed”. I say no, explain QR tickets need immediate ticketing and she says “oh my coughking god” and I’m back on hold again.

You’d need to be a raging alcoholic to deal with this company on a regular basis!

That's shocking. But I'm the fool for being surprised about anything Qantas any more.

To add some balance to the thread:
alcohol nil;
coffee 2 or 3 cups a day;
water every day;
glass of juice a couple of times a week…

To the OP, if you’re asking anonymous people on the internet whether you should cut down your drinking, well, you already know the answer don’t you. First step taken, now follow through. 👍. Doesn’t sound like a problem though, but what would I know. 😊

Alcohol consumption tends to change over time, what seems a lot early in life may seem bland later.
Our bodies adapt to the drug and the required "feeling" takes more consumption and returns less reward.
Thinking about your consumption is useful but even more important is to seek to understand why you drink.
For many the quiet mind delivered by alcohol consumption is a useful tool that can deliver many benefits.
Understanding why you drink and making calm and rational judgments to manage it is likely much more important than the quantity consumed.

These sound like very wise words to me! I don't always end up on the virtuous side of this but agree that conscious drinking is the key here rather than just senselessly getting drunk. But I must say the latter also just doesn't seem very desirable anymore once one gets older.

For me, the most important aspect is company and the ensuing good times. Whether it's discussions on the sofa just with my partner or meeting old friends in Munich for a few beers- that's really what makes it worthwhile.

Typical day of week including weekends:

alcohol nil
coffee nil
tea nil
water and sparkling water 3L/day
Juice about 2 glasses a day
Milk 2 glasses a day

Have never had alcohol in airline lounge except for Sake at Narita J
InFlight alcohol rarely - Had 2 glasses of Dom on EK F. Other than that nil
As an invited guest - alcohol maybe 2 standard drinks if offered.

I don't see the point in drinking alcohol or coffee/tea

What is this quiet mind you speak of? I feel like my mind is racing and overanalysing whenever we drink... if I want alpha waves I'll go for a climb or a cycle I think.

Hi guys, thanks so much for the reply. Seems I should create the thread "How much wine do you drink in a week?

I always want to be self-control, but my daily and weekly wine consumption always exceeded the the limit recommended by the GP. I usually finish a bottle of wine in 3 to 4 days but I can't resist to open another bottle the other day. Sometimes I drink more if I opened a wine that I really enjoy.
