What would you like in the new Qantas safety video?

And I did say most, not all, sigh.

Actually "most" would have (or have a strong chance of ) travelling over water enroute, on takeoff or on final approach. Basically of the jet routes, the ones that don't that I can think of are be MEL-CBR/ASP, and PER-mining towns. SYD, BNE, ADL, DRW, CNS, HBA, OOL, TSV, NTL, all have flight paths over water.

Life jacket discussion and geography aside. Any chance of coming back on topic a bit please?? :):):)

Now...... There are THREE smiley faces there. Not one, Not two, But THREE! So that means I do not wish to offend anyone. I'm just more interested in ideas for the video.

Well, at least it kept the topic up the top.
:) :) :)

The purpose of these videos is to ensure people take notice of what to do in the case of an emergency. So maybe they could use someone whom we all respect. Like Ben Roberts-Smith, the SAS soldier who won the VC recently. He could say that he has fought in serious life and death situations etc but always takes note of the pre flight briefings.

I'm thinking that one of the most effective road safety commercials is that motorbike one by Doohan where he says its far more dangerous on a suburban road than speeding on a race track.

I quite like the new one - the absence of cheesy humour and teamness is a relief and it conveys the impression that there's a strong safety culture throughout the whole company.

Wouldn't mind seeing a feelgood one for a while - with a bit of the 'I Still Call Australia Home' style but with more pizzazz. FAs (in their new uniform) and pilots at various destinations around the world that QF flies to giving snippets of the briefing to some snappy and upbeat but not too overbearing music (like what was in the previous 'Deltalina' video). Imagine the chief pilot with a backdrop of Dubai saying "Your safety is our first priority"... another FA in Manhattan saying "You must keep your seatbelt fastened at all times whilst seated" etc.

If QF wants some on-the-ground user testing too I'm happy to clear my schedule :p

Ben Roberts Smith doing the safety Vid would be awesome.

Maybe after Sept J.Gillard could get some work doing one

And don't forget the Great Barrier Reef... CNS-style! Some of the local CNS crew, showing you how to put on your life-jacket on, all the while underwater scuba diving on the reef... I know a few CNS crew who'd put their hand up for that gig!

How about a mash up of footage of Andrew Bogut on the basketball court, Greg Norman on the golf course, Mark Webber on the race track, Cathy Freeman on the running track, Miranda Kerr on the cat walk and John Travolta on a film set? Then they could all come together at the end, and say something warm and fuzzy about why they are proud of being Australian at some iconic location like Uluru, Opera House or Great Barrier Reef.

Another vote for just stick to the facts. No cheesey humour, no mucking around. As popular as the Lord of the Rings (Air New Zealand) "movie length" safety featurette was I know practically nothing about Lord of the Rings and was busy trying to figure out where the exits are and does Gollum really have anything to do with that? It's a safety video and like most safety signs/briefings etc the KISS (Keep it Simple) principle usually works. Featuring members of the crew would be ok with me and perhaps some non obtrusive music but don't go overboard anything too fancy and distracting.

Qantas have always pressed the safety aspect and I think that needs to be foremost of a demonstration. it's one reason why i like the staff doing the demo in the current one. Perhaps an intro by someone well known and respected. Ben Roberts-Smith is good but possibly not too widespread.

Pushka as a side note, if lifejackets are aboard the operation of them must be demonstrated (CASA requirement).

How I long for the good old days:

"Subtly every aeroplane is different. That's why you need to watch this safety demonstration."

Seriously though, I'd prefer something a little less stilted. The new one with the various staff members is good, but still a little robotic for my liking. I just hope they don't go for an animated version - to me that is just not commensurate with the premium, "best for business" brand they are trying to create.

I wouldn't mind another Olympics-style video, but replacing the athletes with Joe Public/FFs and less corny lines about doing the team thing. I never had a problem with "Hello again..." as it was simple, to the point and without fuss. After speaking with Samantha (Manager of International Crew Performance) at the TweetUp today I could imagine that a "Behind the Scenes" style video (Qantas Cabin Crew Behind the Scenes - A Short Film - YouTube) might be quite effective. It could show a bit of the crew going through their own safety briefing, maybe a bit of the tech crew doing their external and internal checks etc. and the procedures and preparation which goes getting an aircraft ready for departure.

Sorry. That's La Guardia (New York) to Charleston SC in the US - the intended route of US1549 which ended up in the Hudson.

Actually, CLT is Charlotte-Douglas airport in Charlotte North Carolina. Charleston Airport is CHS. I note that the original post has been updated anyway to remove the airport codes.

Back on topic - I don't like the current demo. It is definitely a rip off of the AA "we're glad" video. It also annoys me that the word "safe" or "safety" is used 6 times before the actual demonstration starts. Almost as the bad as the one before the cricket video with the constant reference to "the team". Do the people who write these scripts actually read them again afterwards? It just sounds stupid saying that their priority is safety 6 times over - in fact it makes it sound like they're a bit paranoid and trying to cover something up.

I think the Virgin Australia voice over on the 737 is one of the best. It is clear, simple, well worded, and the voice is not annoying at all. They just don't have a video to go with it!

I also agree with another poster who suggested the old "subtly, every aircraft is different" should make a come back. I still think I could recite that video word for word today - and that's probably a good thing.

How about. Attention everyone. Including you, frequent flyer who thinks that the newspaper is important.
at Qantas, we want you to have a safe journey. Travelling by plane is safer than every other form of transport, but here is what you need to know if an unexpected issue occurs. It is important to listen to this message regardless if you are a frequent flyer or someone who flies infrequently.

PS. I'm not paid for creating safety announcements... and it should be obvious!

Probably because about twenty score and ten people remember that very line you quoted, if they remember anything else. Even Pam Ann knows it like the back of her hand.

I personally don't like that one, especially when it was transplanted to Jetstar, because it gets very long and ridiculous when you run the full checklist style summary at the beginning before launching into the video. The intonation is very, very unnatural - it really is more or less like a robot doing dictation (except a very good one).

That said, the phrasing and sentence flow of some of the last safety videos hasn't been good in parts. The captain who speaks at the beginning (e.g. of the Olympics version of the safety video) - I'm sure he's a great captain and a nice man - but either he's got severe asthma and can't say many words at a time, or he needs to work on speaking more naturally. (Maybe he speaks like that because he speaks very fast naturally, and was told to slow down, especially since ESL people also need to be able to understand him... don't know, guessing now...)

To be honest, some of the best readings of the safety demonstration have been from.... cabin service managers, when the safety video malfunctions and they need to do it manually from script.

I don't mind the taped Virgin Australia safety demo reading... though when I listen to it, why do I keep thinking of those dreaded Demtel ads?

And I'll put $10 down that more Australians know the first verse of our national anthem than they know the meaning and how to use the word, "subtly". And that's a big call.

What's wrong with just saying something like from the safety video that opened with the kid throwing the paper aeroplane, "Each aircraft type is different, so it's important that you pay attention to this safety demonstration." Malaysia Airlines preface their safety demonstration with a PA similar to, "Since safety procedures can vary from aircraft to aircraft, it's important that we have your full attention." And of course we don't need a smart aleck remark a la Virgin Atlantic (paraphrased, with cheesy cartoon), "Even if you fly with us heaps of times (needs to be cheesier than this), it's still important that you watch this safety demo."

Simple, make a multiple choice exam out of it, fail and you don't fly. That ought to cause plenty of empty seats on JQ to DPS. ;)

Seriously, my pet peeve on planes is the bazillions announcements they make, blah weather, blah comfortable, blah tray table, blah change for good blah, blah and blah you just totally tune out.

Same applies with the safety video, short, sharp and concise works best.

Stick to the facts, but change it often, I.e the multi crew thing is great, why not make 20 versions of it, it wouldn't cost a lot more.

Keeping people interested and engaged is the way to go.

Failing that decent suggestion, show pictures of plane wrecks and dead dismembered bodies of people who didn't follow the safety advice in an emergency. - cigarette packet style warnings ;P

Well you disk ask Bossreggie.....

For a long time I've thought the Wiggles would be fantastic in a safety video!

For a long time I've thought the Wiggles would be fantastic in a safety video!

The new wiggles? the shafted wiggle? the give it away but back again wiggle? or the retired wiggles?

Although I'm not sure JB747 would make a good captain feathersword.

Alan Joyce is a monty to play Dorothy the dinosaur

I think your suggestion has legs.
