OK, something for the speculators or conspiracy theorists.

I for some reason am subscribed to the QF ex-Jakarta specials emailing list. A hot deal email came through this morning, showing:

Singapore Special Deal

Experience our exceptional service from Jakarta to Singapore from US$85*, one way only.

JAKARTA one-way fares from
Singapore
US$85* Economy
US$310* Business

Book now
Sale fares valid for departure on 17 August 2013 only. Offer ends 16 August 2013, unless sold out prior.
Seat availability is limited and return flights are not available.

With note at the bottom:

* Prices are for one-way Economy and Business from Jakarta as indicated and include taxes and carrier surcharges (excluding airport departure tax). Return flights are not available. Prices are correct as at 14 June 2013 but may fluctuate if carrier charges, fees, taxes or currency change. This offer is for travel on Qantas Airways services. Airfares are non-refundable - date changes not permitted. Other terms and conditions apply.

Now to the best of my knowledge QF do not operate services between Jakarta and Singapore, if anything they would be codeshares on A320's on either JQ or 3K, without business class of course. Odd. Of course when clicking through it takes you straight to the Jetstar website. Is there something in the wings, so to speak, as a continuing service from Australia?

I do remember reading somewhere about QF 81/82? Going by Jakarta on its way to SIN sometime in August.
It'll be A330 as the JQ/3K 320's only have Y

IIRC someone was asking why there was that exact flight on Aug 17.

I don't think anyone knew!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

They must be trying to fill the plane after/ before the group booking at CGK.

Looks like QF81 does a stopover there on Saturday 17 August. Can't see any other occasions in the timetable either side of that.

For some reason, QF82 SIN-SYD is flying via Jakarta on 10 August and QF81 SYD-SIN is stopping in Jakarta on 17 August. There was another thread on this recently, perhaps there is something on in Jakarta at this time so QF has increased capacity there?

I'm surprised you got an email advertising a flight that operates once. At least it did some that the fare was available on 17 August 2013 only - it's the only day this flight exists! It is bookabke on the QF website, without being transferred to the JQ site, but only if you select the "correct" date.

Idul Fitri (end of Ramadan) is on 8 August, and many in Indonesia take leave around this period, I wonder if that has something to do with it.

I wish this was more publicised. In fact I'd like to see QF experiment with more tag flights like this which might lead to successful expansion ideas.

not a bad little SC earner - anyone interested in doing an MR? ;)

I wonder if one of the SYD-SIN services might more frequently detour via CGK in future if loads remain so low...

No, not that good. Looking at kayak, can do CGK-KUL-SIN on MH for $100 more and that gets double the status credits.

MH often have better run value on their domestic flights, $310 will get you 1.5 round trips KUL LGK and 120 SC in J

As mentioned above it's related to Idul Fitri - in past years QF has put on additional direct QF41/42 flights to cater for the demand for people taking holidays at the end of Ramadan. I guess they weren't confident of filling the entire plane so looked to take a detour instead out of Singapore (which makes sense given they have the rights on that route still). They sometimes do the same in the lead up to Christmas as well to apparently cater for the demand of returning students.

17 August is Indonesian Independence Day when demand for flights to neighbouring countries is very high. Qantas simply wants to play along :D
