What I ate today - the food thread

A simple, but delicious dinner at place called Number 8 Wire in Rotorua.

Ordering is via tablet at the table, presumably keeping staff costs down.

About 15 mins after ordering a waiter appeared with an extra glass of wine and said “Sorry it’s a bit slow. This one is on us.”

We’d not said anything. Nor were we expecting food that swiftly. Excellent service.

The predictable Miss H went for creamy pasta.

Mrs H had the ribs:

I selected the venison:

And a side of greens to share.

Nothing flash about the place. Just wholesome, delicious food.

Worth considering if in Rotorua.

Duke's Chiang Mai has been something of a tradition for wife and I since we first met 12 years ago.

They had run out of Creme Brulee.....

The menu is written on a blackboard and changes every 2 days.
We will be back for the Brulee - and especially with this view at sunset.20250426_172702.jpg

Today was in the private function room of Supernormal restaurant on Queen Street, Brisbane.

Sounded good

Great starter. Light, fresh and a little tangy

IMG_2247.jpeg

They came out as whole breads and needed to be cut. Base was a little overcooked as it was tough to cut.

IMG_2248.jpeg

Wow, they didn’t miss with the chili but I didn’t want to see good food go to waste.

IMG_2249.jpeg

As you can see, falling off the bone. Polished it off with my seatmates. Only the bone remained.

IMG_2250.jpeg

Missed getting a photo of the dumplings, but they were good as well.

Some people had left by the time dessert came so had to have two of these.

Dinner with friends at one of our locals - Everton Park Hotel. We were all on the Committee of our kids Junior AFL Club so get together now as most of our kids have stopped playing or aged out (going to play seniors). We watched Collingwood v Geelong and had a not so quiet bevvie or 3:

Spaghetti with prawns and a side of sweet potato chips:

BBQ Ribs - quite a meal:

Dinner at Le Pas Sage in ADL CBD.

Still pretty full from lunch. So thought we’d have something light to call it a night, but ended with quite a fare.

Amuse bouche was crusty bread with compound butter, balsamic glaze and greens. The amuse bouche offered initially had anchovies in it. So the waitperson kindly offered to make a different one without anchovies and boy was it good! 😀

Had a pot of “Mystery Green Tea with Ginger”. Turned out to a dark blue coloured tea that tasted amazing. On first taste, I thought it was matcha - but it was blue color. It was nice to drink and I finished that pot rather quickly.

IMG_1626.jpeg

The tea was served in very stylish and well appointed tea pot and cup/saucer. Quite posh! 😀

One of my mates suggested the Vieux Carre - it was a refreshing drink.

For food, I went with “The Board of Four Butters” - an absolutely amazing treat. All 4 butter were served at room temp, smooth and spreadable. I ordered extra bread and thoroughly enjoyed the dish. Will definitely order again.

Dinner at Makan, ADL CBD. lovely little South Asian restaurant. The customer service, staff attentiveness and attitude is top notch. Amazing bunch of staff that are knowledgeable and very accommodative of requests. Everyone in my dinner party felt welcomed and looked after well. Definitely recommend.

Started off with an off-menu, experimental spicy marg. When we enquired if there was marg on menu, the friendly wait staff informed about the experimental marg recipe they were testing out and it was really good. Few in my dinner party went for a second serve. The wait staff were very keen to take our feedback on this experimental drink and we were all quite pleased with the recipe.

Followed by a variety of dishes. I went with the schezuan roasted eggplant. Amazing dish with generous serve of schezuan sauce, peanuts, crunchy chilli oil on top. The eggplant was roasted well, yet had a nice bite. Highly recommended. The portion size is rather big for an entree, and definitely worth the money.

Followed by another off-menu drink - their take on an Old Fashioned with Umeshu plum. The drink doesn’t feel like much at the beginning - but gradually builds as time goes. Similar to the previous drink, the waitstaff patiently took our feedback and were very happy that we did provide feedback. Forgot to take a pic, but I’d recommend it greatly.

Followed by King Oyester Mushroom in a spicy sauce, with a generous portion of fresh chilli and rice. Great dish. When the dish hit the table, I thought it looked like fried potatoes. The mushrooms were cooked to the right texture, the sauce was there, not overpowering. I had asked for the fresh chilli on the side as I believe the dish needed a chilli kick - but that’s just me.

All in all an amazing dinner at Makan. We ended up spending quite sometime at the restaurant. We had finished our meals, but were having chats with the wait staff who were more than engaging, friendly and genuinely customer service oriented.

As we finished our food and tables were cleared - the wait staff brought a glass of non-alcoholic digestif that the bar staff made for us, on the house. Again this was an experimental, not on the menu yet drink. It had hints of ginger, gooseberry served with a sprig of burnt/toasted rosemary. A calming drink after a rather heavy meal and it was appreciated. As with experimental drinks, the waitstaff asked for and recorded our feedback.

Will definitely come back to this place the next time I’m in ADL.
