I'm 100 sc's short of platinum status. I've got a trip to HK next week and fortunately I'm flying up in D class which will mean that I land having achieved the higher status.

My question is, and sorry that this is the 2nd boring question in two days, does my return flight, 5 days later count towards my renewal of platinum status or do these points just disappear as my membership life cycle doesn't renew till the end of May this year?

Example, I get 240 sc's for the trip which will give me 1540 sc's before the end of May. So come 1st June do my sc's start at 140 or are they back to 0?

Hope this is clear enough.

Well done on acheiving WP. Unfortunately your status credits will continue to accrue in the current year, regardless of the amount you have and then they will reset on your anniversary to 0, in which you embark on keeping your status. :D

Unfortunately QFF is one of the FFPs that does this. Others, such as NZ Airpoints, reset your membership year when attain higher level for the first time which means following status earning goes towards requalifying rather than being wasted.

The extra QF SCs arent totally wasted, since they will still count towards lifetime status and earning the next loyalty bonus.

I would class this as fortunate since you end up with 12-24 months of Platinum status guaranteed rather than only 12. I prefer this to the BA approach of resetting years on attainment of a new status level

What do you mean by that Dave?
How do you get the 12-24 months?
Cheers

Remainder of current membership year plus all of next membership year.

If you qualified Platinum in first week of your membership year then you get 1 year + 51 weeks.

If you qualified Platinum on the last day of your membership year then you get 1 year + 0.

Note for simplicity I am ignoring any difference between qualifying period and status validity period (most FFPs have an offset which varies significantly from program to program).

Eg.

NZ Airpoints qualifying period Feb to Jan would give status Mar to Feb.
UA Mileage Plus qualifying period Calendar Year gives status Jan to Feb the next year
LH Miles and More qualifying period one of (or for HON status both) 2 consecutive Calendar Years gives status Jan to Feb the 3rd year
etc

I also prefer the QF method of retaining the membership anniversary. Keep accruing SCs for the remainder of the year with Partner Gold as the next goal, then the Lifetime Silver and Gold status.

You also have the choice to post to a different scheme such as disAAdvantage where the burn rates are more favourable than with QF.

NM - excuse my ignorance, but how is this done?

Join AA's program AAdvantage online and get a membership number. Use this FF membership number when making your flight reservations. Call AA in the USA to register for their plAAtinum chAAlenge, earn 10,000 Q points in 90 days and you have OneWorld Sapphire status and a sway of miles in the bank.

An AA AAward ticket anywhere in Australia/NZ (return trip) costs 20,000 miles in economy and 35,000 miles in business class. Or an AA AAward return trip Australia to USA costs 75,000 in economy, 125,000 miles in business class, or 145,000 miles in first class. Compare that with QF burn rates and you start to see some AAdvantage, especially in the premium cabins.

Earn rates on the flights are better for AA Plat members (100% status bonus) than QF Gold (50% status bonus) even though both are OneWorld Sapphire status. Down side for earning for Australian residents is the ability to earn points with credit cards.

That would be one heck of a status run getting 1200 credits in one week, something like a F trip around the world!

I was going to be serious for a change but since this thread has gone to the dogs.... well puppies anyway....
