So it appears that VH-VPH flew into LAX last Friday and hasn't left. It's causing big delays in VA's schedule and now my flight VA23 from MEL to LAX on Monday has been changed from a 11:20AM departure to a 7:50PM departure even though the metal comes in at 5:50PM a full day earlier? It's also screwed with my connections.

If they anticipate VH-VPH to be out of the air for over a week there must be something significantly wrong with it?

Regards,
CJ

At 06:30PDT on it's approach to LAX the aircraft seemed to slow rapidly, before picking up speed again. It is probably nothing more than an interesting observation?

Gate Gourmet truck? :)

Edit: No, that was just the Gate Gourmet listeria thing back awhile at LAX.

This Virgin B77W appears to have arrived in LAX last Friday at 11.13 local. Word in LA is that there is a fuel tank problem and there is no known commercial use of VH VPH since then.
Multiple flights between LA and MEL and BNE have been effected.
Call centre wait times have extended to over one hour.
Some passengers delayed by days as VA will only use VA and DL flights to uplift disrupted passengers.
VH VPH (St Kilda Beach) is VA's newest 777 at 8.6 years old; Average for 77W fleet is 10 years.
With a fleet of only five, having one out with unscheduled repairs is creating significant consequences for passengers.

Additional flights by three of VAs 77Ws have been running (mostly) between LAX and BNE. Boeing 777s with non-regular flights include VH-VPD, VH-VPE and VH-VOZ. That said, passenger reports suggest planes are leaving LAX with seats empty yet passengers are also reporting that they have had to wait days to get on VA flights.

You'd think in the home country of Boeing, and at such a major port, a straightforward fix like that should be relatively quick.

The Boeing 77W VH-VPH was scheduled to take out VA8 LAX to BNE arriving the morning of June 21st - but again it was cancelled (as shown on FlghtRadar24) . Whatever the problem is, it is not being fixed quickly. The last know flight was into LAX arriving in the morning of Friday 14th - that is more than a week ago.

See the Qantas flight delays/cancellations thread for how QF has an ongoing problem with A388 VH-OQA, as part of a wing was hit by a catering truck on 10 June and it's not carried passengers since. Tit for tat between the two Australian carriers.

Boeing 77W VH VPH has now landed at VCV in California at 14.10 local Saturday 22 June 2019. That means is was at LAX for a little over 8 days. With extensive facilities, the fuel tank issue may now be resolved.
Virgin Australia has been scrambling to manage with only 4 of their 5 long haul Boeings in operational condition. VA have started non-standard timings to cover demand. A number of daylight flights from LAX to BNE and MEL have now operated or are scheduled.
The disrupted passengers have reported poor handling by VA with delays of days and an unwillingness of VA to use QF to get to passengers to their destinations with more limited delay.

Um when VA stuffed up their US launch they rebooked everyone onto the QF A380 fleet for weeks on end which although was seen as a massive own goal at least demonstrated their customer first ‘mantra’.

Clearly that’s out the window along with a few other things :)
