Back in the late 80's when I started travelling regularly for work (and wearing suits) we used to travel with a brief case and a suit pack.

There was enough space for 2 suits 5 shirts, shoes and enough to get through a whole week, and could either be hung up in an cupboard onboard or a few could fit into the overheads.

Now its little hard cases or backpacks.

Weight restrictions were not really enforced back in TAA and Ansett days, but the old suit pack could hold a lot and be put into some places a hard case cannot.

Where have they all gone?

Just googled it, some of them are pretty sexy (for luggage).

Ive seen what I thought was marketing/design bags on flights similar to the google search, maybe there were suit packs.

I've still got mine! Big and bulky in comparison. For the little "business" travel I do these days, a carry-on bag is enough.

Perhaps tied to a similar question ... What happened to suits? ;)

One of the first things my new GM declared was that jeans was OK in the workplace, its been a bit downhill since.

Now seeing thongs (on the feet) on Fridays and last week one of the female staff in tiny jean shorts. Hate it.

Good points.

Given the cost of travel between then and now, trips are likely shorter in general and fewer changes of clothes, combined with the reduction in the need for suits has seen their demise.

We used to leave Sunday night in jeans and have 2 suits for the week. Now I wear a suit in the plane and only usually stay one or two nights.

Still, i liked being able to hang them up in the front locker.

What happened to suit bags ? Wheels were invented... Having been thru several suit bags over many years I really don't miss lumping them over the shoulder down the length of some airport corridors. A smart little wheelie takes care of things now, doesn't crease the jacket and holds about the same.

Used to see them used to hold a month's worth of clothes as hand luggage. The old rules of one bag, one computer bag and one suit carrier used to allow a LOT of luggage if the suit carrier was abused. Some were so thick they couldn't fold them in two! Haven't seen this since the early 2000s though.

... and when they were abused with too much stuff, off with the shoulder strap and into checked luggage..

You could try the charity shops. They have them donated from time to time, and can cause a stirring conversation among the staff, but hey,
if they are your needed item, go hunting. We boast seven of these "department stores" in our little rural town!!!

Major luggage stores still sell them - but they only seem to come in one colour today - black!

You certainly don't see them as much as you used to.

Tumi still do them (black natch..) and I think I still have a beaten-up old grey Samsonite suit bag unless senior management has chucked it out.

Lots of useful things about a suit bag - flexible so you can mould them into overhead lockers, hang them up on board, sling them on the shower door, unzip a few pockets and get changed like a grown up, not a camper, and even (if its not too full) stick it down on the floor in front of your cheap-cough Y seat, but just remember its your suit/jacket/outfit that you're treading on..
