What do you think acceptable appearance for a FA is?

Apologies in advance if this topic has been discussed before...

On a flight today, the four FAs where all immaculately presented - as is normally the case. Three ladies and one gentleman. One of the female FAs was dressed extremely well, and had her make-up on nicely (not like some who look like they are about to take to the ice with their partner at the Winter Olympics!) and her hair was manicured into a ball with one of those net-thingy-me-jigs over the bun. When she walked down the aisle however, I couldn't but help notice a large and clearly visible tattoo (Chinese symbol) on the back of her neck just under the hairline.

It got me thinking. I am no conservative, nor snob. I too have a tattoo (although not in a visible part of my body, unless I were at the beach perhaps) but I couldn't help but think about policies of retail outlets whereby no excessive jewellery or tattoos can be seen. TV shows like Glee where most of the actors have tattoos require their staff to wear skin-coloured makeup over the tattoo for filming.

I am genuinely interested to know what people on here - who would be exposed to travel and FAs more than perhaps the general leisure travel population - think of this. A couple of weeks ago a male FA also had a tattoo on his wrist, mostly hidden by his watch. That didn't phase me - perhaps I am being sexist - though I think if the guy had a tattoo on his neck, it would be even worse than the females??? (IMHO)

Allow me to point out a few things:

* The FA in question did her job impeccably.
* I am referring to the appearance of FAs, both male and female
* This is not intended to be an argument about the failing standards of self-presentation in contemporary society (!), more so a dicussion about what people think is appropriate from their own perspective, and how they feel when they see something that doesn't meet with their expectations
* Hair/make-up/wrinkled shirts/yes I will say it - even overweight staff whose clothes are far too small (like a flight I had yesterday - th male FA's shirt buttons needed to be pressurised more than the cabin - his stomach clearly visible to everyone he walked past. I have no issue with someone's size - but he should have worn a shirt about 3 or 4 sizes larger)...

Interestingly, when I flew to LAX on VA in J, one of the male FAs had long hair. His hair and general appearance were spotless and it was well coiffed, and indeed suited him nicely. I still made the comment to my travel companion that I was surprised to see he had it that way. It didn't bother me in the slightest - though I thought perhaps some European/Asian/American carriers perhaps would not be so progressive. Keeping in mind that this was a VA flight, and very in groove with their 'cool' image - he nevertheless was working the J cabin. I hope no-one minds me mentioning this - as I honestly believe he was a great rep for V Australia - but cannot help but think some perhaps would have issue... Bruce Ruxton perhaps ;)

Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Perhaps some experiences? Perhaps some even know what the formal (or implied) policies are within the Australian carriers. Is there a 'too much make up rule'? for example. Within the last month I was on a flight where one of the male FAs was clearly wearing some foundation and possibly eyebrow stuff (sorry ladies and gents I don't know what it's called!) - I noticed and didn't really think much more about it. I bet some others might?

Again, apologies if this has been discussed previously, and more so: apologies if anyone has taken offense to this post. I honestly do not mean it that way - just curious what you all have to think - or if it even registers on your radar.

Cheers,

Misha

Tattoos for some reason have become so popular it would not worry me.
However I often muse on whether the owner of the tattoo really has thought about how it will look in future years. One woman I see around DPO,probably in her 50s,has a whole arm tattoo. The skin is not nearly as taut as it was and the tattoo is nothing more than a piece of abstract art.Not becoming at all.

Up front, I'll state I'm no fan of tattoos at all. You can't walk around anywhere these days without encountering some drongo with a stupid tattoo.

Amongst the list of offenders seen in the last few days included;

  • women with the names of all her children tattooed on her shoulder,
  • tattoos on both arms which looked straight out of an anime scene with stars of all colours shooting everywhere (this was on a guy), and
  • non-maori people tattooed all over in various designs which had obvious maori connotations.
As for tattoos on FA's in general, I agree that some people might find them confronting and I think if they're visible and can't be adequatly covered up then you have no place being an FA.

My dislike of tattoos aside, FA's normally have to abide by strict dress codes as part of their employment. I don't know what DJ's standards are in that regard - so if crazydave or any other authenticated rep could chime in on this would be appreciated.

As a personal preference I think it's a more professional approach to cover up the tattoos.... In general DJ VA seem to do this. I have spotted a number of their FA that have tattoos and they usually have them covered with a flesh colored bandage, bandaid etc.... Often the tattoo is just visible but not greatly noticeable...

They can have head-to-toe tattoos and piercings and wear a mankini for all I care, so long as they do the job properly.

Misha - I am glad people like you fly coach so we will never come in contact. Enjoy your day.

Groper - i'm disappointed that you decided to chime in with this as your first post. Otherwise we could have avoided contact entirely. Have a great weekend.

:shock::shock::shock:

I am sorry that I have offended you Groper. I had no intention to do so - which I tried to put forward in my post ... I obviously failed miserably.

* I point out that have a tattoo and was not complaining or judging, just sharing a thought about how other people may see these things.

* I had no issue with the service and cannot complain about the staff in any way, shape or form.

I thought that on a forum like this, one could enter into a discussion about perspectives, opinions, and social commentary without getting personal or going on the attack. Again, I sincerely apologise to you - though I doubt it will mean anything as you clearly have an adamant point of view.

Clearly, a lowly coach passenger like me (I won't even enter into the correctness or ridiculousness of this point) should keep my questions to myself, dare I offend the nobility of airline passengers. I imagine I should best stick to the bus, or perhaps even a pushbike to spare the more refined the displeasure of my company.

To everyone else: if the tone of my post, or any comments held therein, or just myself in general are blatantly offensive please advise me so - I would happily remove myself from this forum than cause disruption/upset/disharmony. Not my intention at all.

Also, if this post has somehow violated the rules/protocol of this forum I have no problem with a moderator closing it down - my bad and I will gladly wear that if it is deemed so.

Hi Misha,

Your post certainly didn't offend me in the slightest; seems others have less tact and really didn't bother to read the entire post.

Your question asked for various points of view, whilst stressing that the original question was not to judge, but rather to gain others' take on general FA standards of dress.

I was, in fact, more offended by Groper's response - since when did flying "coach" make one lowly???

Not all of us are able to fly J or F, but then again, last time I checked, money didn't buy class or taste either.

Welcome to AFF - don't let one post deter you from returning; we really are a nice bunch, and enjoy back and forth discussions that generate lively (good humoured) banter.

Misha I wouldn't worry about being insulted by one post wonders.

I certainly don't think your post came across as offensive at all.

My 2c worth is that for work FA's should have their tattoos covered and not be visible on any part of their body.

I personally don't like tattoos but think it is each individual's decision as to whether you have one. I have never seen a FA on SQ have one, tho:p

My dislike of tattoos aside, FA's normally have to abide by strict dress codes as part of their employment. I don't know what DJ's standards are in that regard - so if crazydave or any other authenticated rep could chime in on this would be appreciated.

I'm obviously not a DJ rep but my understanding is DJ do not allow visible tattoos. The previous female uniform had a collar which mostly hid neck tattoos while the new blouses mean that females need to put a bandaid or make up on a neck tattoo.

Another issue I was told about for men is the previous short sleeve shirts hid upper arm tatts while the new ones have rediculously short sleeves. FA's who could previously wear a short sleeve shirt and hide a tatt are now in long sleeve ones. And don't get me started on my thoughts on a tie with a short sleeve shirt.

I don't personally like tattoos, or understand the need for people to adorn their bodies with them, I find them ugly, not attractive or interesting. However I recognise that people make different choices and have the right to do so.

I recently flew DJ and noticed that one FA who had her hair back in a high ponytail, had a large flesh coloured bandaid on the back of her neck, which I assume was covering a tattoo. I appreciated the efforts taken to cover it...... just me, YMMV.
