For a flight I am looking at from the Amex ITN site.
(Accessed using http://flyaow.com/classamex.htm

F3 A3 J9 D9 U0 Y9 B9 H4 K2 M0 L0 S0 V0 O0

From my understanding

First Class : F, A
Business: J, D, U
- U being the 'upgrade certificate / points)
Economy: Y, B, H, K, M, L, S, V, O
- K is RTW fares

Which classes does Qantas count has 'Full Economy' (ie full tier credits) and which are 'Discount Economy' (ie half tier credits)

Need some serious credits by end-Aug

Y will give you full-economy status credits, all other are "discount economy". As you are looking at an international trip, you are better off buying a business-class seat, as full Y international fares are only just short of J fares.

If you need credits in a hurry, do shorter domestic legs on full Y - such as NTL-SYD or CBR-SYD. These usually have the best "dollar per status credit" ratio, with the exception of big international tickets like a OWE.

Another good full Y SCs contender is World Traveller Plus on BA (codes W and T). For $1000 more than a discount economy Aus-UK trip with sidetrip to HEL, which might net 160 SCs in discount Y, the same trip in WT+ would be 240 SCs to UK + 120 SCs for the sidetrip (which on a WT+ ticket is in D in Europe) - a total of 360 SCs.

An extra $1,000 for an extra 200 SCs seems like a good deal to me. :)

Also, keep in mind that from 29 June, H and K will qualify for full SCs.

I agree Shillard,

Verbatim from QF, when I went to talk to them re : quotes for a business trip "We have some fares that are full economy, but to be completely honest, no one would really use them, because you can pay a couple of hundred more for business" (true).

And very true on the domestic leg front. O.K. - you don't get duty free (so no liquor or cigs), but a run from PER-ADL (5 hours) will net 20 credits in economy, with a big 8 hour run from MEL-Hong Kong netting you 25. Why ? Because there is a massive status imbalance between zone 2 to zone 3. Try getting just over the boundary of 5000 miles (and into a zone 4 flight) from anywhere in Australia, and just about the only place you can do it to in SE asia (if I am correct) is Osaka-MEL.

Do you really care about earning points ? I don't. You shouldn't either, because credits are more important. You can't get 'more' credits, except by flying higher classes or further. Credits are the most important bit. You can always get FF points by racking up through double or triple points deals, or car rentals etc. But status ? You can only get via flying, no other way. Personally, I'd go for status first, then use the plat/gold/silver status to boost the points through the 100/50/25 % on top of the points bonus.

Shillard is right on the best "dollar per status credit" ratio idea. Personally, I have an excel spreadsheet with all the distances between major airports, plus the credits and points earned. Plot these out through charts and you'll see a trend in the credits to miles ratios on all the different classes available. It actually goes DOWN later on ! :) (I don't have it handy, but I believe it is around zone 4)

Forgive me for my apparent lack of understanding, but do the numbers following the various classes relate to how many seats are still available in the respective class?? If they don't, can someone give me a quick rundown on how it works??

So, if what Willyroo says is right (I haven't checked it out yet), that would take you over to silver from 0 credits all year. Do 2 trips like that and you'd get gold.

Which class code are these seats in ?

I take it that H+K were previously discount economy.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Nick, yes they do, but it isn't always accurate. Most airlines will use 9 as their "seat numbers available" because it's only a 1 digit space. Some use 4 (just to confuse, but QF use 9). So there could be 50 or 9 seats available, but it will still show 9.

Once the available seats fall below the 9 or 4, it will mean that it's a true count and will decrease through to 0 as seats are booked. Sometimes a class is closed and there are different letters inserted or symbols (I haven't struck many, but seen the explanation in another BB).

Hope this is a good start.

There is also Z (First Class Award Redemption) - that doesn't show generally. K is domestic as well - i.e. KISOX.

Full Economy (or Fully Flexible in post 1 July speak) is, I believe, Y and B, with H & K becoming the Flexi Saver fares.

Hey Guys,

I just flew FRA-SIN in J and it has come up on my FF profile as only being full economy (I only got 80 SCs for it) and about 6,500 points. I was originally booked in as economy, but I changed my ticket at MAN and so I think the details haven't been entered correctly. My ticket stub said 'J Class' on it, and I was right at the front of a 747 in 2F, even the menus read 'business'.

What is going on ? Is there some mistake ? Surely, I should get a cabin bonus / applicable status bonuses AND another 80 credits ?!

OW RTW booking classes:
  • M - economy (discount Y for SCs)
  • D - business (full J for SCs)
  • A - first (full F for SCs)

icemann, surely you will...when you fax or email to QFF a copy of the BP and ticket, they'll realise they made a mistake and credit the additional points and SC's 8)

Done that on Friday, plus faxed them a copy of the Marriot hotel receipt that I had. :D

Hotel staff around the world still don't seem to understand that you can earn QFF points, even though you are not a member of 'their' reward program (e.g. Starwood Guest, Hyatt Gold Passport etc). :D

Sometimes, (e.g. last flight from BNE to ADL), even though my QFF was in the system, and my fiancee's, it took a fax and a week to get the FF points / status on the computer.

You think you're missing out on points / SC?
I used to fly from RAAF Pearce (near Perth) to RAAF Richmond (near Sydney) on a C-130 Hercules..... no points, no SC...... and the inflight service?
Well, can't complain too much. In 1980 it used to cost $1.56 to fly across Australia via the 'other' airline..... The flight was free, the $1.56 was for a boxed lunch!

Actually Gordon, I quite like Biscuits Brown with Menus ABCD :D

Better than Vermin Blue.

I know what you mean about the RAAF planes. :D But hey, it's free. All I had to do (in the past) is go up to the RAAF base with a military ID and I could get on the C-130 to anywhere that they were flying to.

I was half tempted to during my hellish year working in North Germany

Just following up here, because all the flights that I've ever been on have been during the M-F weekdays. I'm currently in SYD on a flight from ADL and checked the QFF profile. My SCs and points haven't been added yet, but my number was in the computer, and it's Sunday arvo.

Question - are the computers switched off on the weekends ? (hence, no updates, until maybe Monday 9am ?)
