What cheeses me off

Not possible to change the position of the HWS in my case. Even if I could the make the run to kitchen island shorter, doing that would lenghten the run to the bathrooms.
My mums house has the same issue. I have tried for 20 years to talk her into putting 10L hot water service under the sink. But no she need the cupboard space as the other 20 or so aren't enough. I think it takes around 4L of water to get warm.

Each time I have got rid of a gas HWS in various houses and installed solar I have made sure the plumber makes the run to the kitchen the shortest.

All my water pipes run across the ceiling in the roof space. The solar tank is midway between bath and kitchen. It still takes too long, hence the kettle.

Mind you, water is cheap. It is the supply charge that is high. Nevertheless it is ingrained not to waste water!

After a few years of living in my place, I appreciated some design features.

Hot water is immediately next to the spare or guests loo - it’s basin has instant hot water. Five steps to the kitchen so that gets hot water after -5 seconds or I can take a few steps and get the hot water out of the guest loo wash basin.

Main bedroom ensuite is directly above the hot water so it gets hot water in maybe 10 seconds.

Kids/spare bedroom’s bathroom is middle of the house and well, hot water takes whatever time to get there. Someone had to lose out.

Courtyard shower for apres spa is way the other end of the place - it takes forever to get hot but in the meantime it can water the lawn.
