What cheeses me off

WCMO today? Arriving home to find my Hills Hoist lying at a 45 degree angle on the back lawn, having completely snapped off at the base. It appears that it had rusted all the way through and the combined weight of a full load of washing plus a gusty Sydney day seems to have been the final straw. At least this one lasted longer than its predecessor, which had been installed for less than a year before it was demolished by a falling tree branch (from a dying eucalypt that Council would not let us touch ).

Todays WCMO, travelators.

So to get to the food court in the shopping centre over the road from my apartment here in Singapore it's on Level B3, so 1 escalator and 4 inclined travelators to get there. No stairs  People tend to stand 2 abreast on the travelators, because god knows most people are completely incapable of walking. But what is really annoying is when you get stuck behind people going up, and then when they get to the escalator (where it's not as annoying) they decide to move across and make room for others and go single file 🤷‍♂️

I guess have been programmed by the government to stand to one side on an escalator (for MRT stations) but don't think or apply that logic to the slower moving travelator. Except the older, frailer folk, who are acutely aware that they are slow moving and might hold people up - these people are really very considerate (although at times its seems they too get frustrated be slow moving 20-somethings).

What's wrong, cat got your tongue. ;)

I was at the supermarket the on the weekend and an older bloke was standing in front of a refrigerated display with his trolley sideways covering most of the display. I usually leave my trolley to one side when I approach a display and as I could not get to the display I said "Excuse me". No response so I said it again louder. Then I needed to raise my voice again saying "Excuse me". So I lightly bumped his trolley. He looked up and said "sorry, I'm deaf" .....

WCMO is people who liberally use the word "perfect".
Although we all have tics of sorts, as a teacher, one time apparently I used to say "OK" a lot. I was under observation by an assessing teacher, and they had a lot of good to tell me about my teaching, but they kept a tally of the number of times I said "OK".

Currently, the word I'm trying not to say too much of is, "so".

I had a lecturer in uni who would start almost every sentence with, "At the end of the day..." This got particularly grating when we were going through worked mathematical problems.

What really highlights the lack of aggregated media vocabulary is the phrase "into the future".

Better than everyone proclaiming, "make <insert word here> great again".

No, this is not a political protest; seriously, people have been lifting that phrase and replacing the word.

Yes. I thought so. I don't want to report them or anything. They are working with families who need their help. I just want to stop the spam but when you donate you need an email address for receipt. I just put in a fake mobile number. Plus landline. Wouldn't let me skip either one .

WCMO is that despite online shopping being mainstream for over 20 years our biggest retailers still dont do it properly.

Online only stores like Amazon and The Iconic can take an order and ship it same day (worst case next working day) and you usually receive item next day or worst case within 48hours.

Yet you order from Myer, David Jones, Sportscraft and they dont even have a central warehouse for processing online orders, so you are at the mercy of their coughpy online page sending an order (probably by fax or carrier pigeon) to a store with stock, then for someone there to bother to go and find it on shelf, get around to printing a label and then schlep on down to the post office.

I ordered an item online on Monday needed for tomorrow as the city store did not have any, and according to AusPost tracking the store has finally created a label today but still not sent the item.

The website said expect delivery in 2-3 days so should have arrived yesterday, no chance since its not even with Auspost yet.

And then we have idiots like Gerry Harvey complaining about overseas online retailers - if I can order shoes from NZ with free postage and have them on my feet within 48 hours why cant bloody Sportcraft pop a pair of suit pants in the mail within 4 days?

And i cant cancel the order because its "in progress" even if I could manage to find in store elsewhere.

Meanwhile I ordered some not urgent socks from another store last night around 6pm and they were delivered 2 hours ago.

Similar to shipping… was at Bunnings. Asked about fencing product. ‘Oh, that’s out the back and only available on click and collect, it will take four hours’.

‘so it’s out the back?’

‘yes’

‘but you can’t go get it for me?’

‘it will take four hours’.

Or if you’re in a store and it’s ‘online pricing only’.

‘so if i order this on line, I can get the cheaper price… I can click and collect at this store?’

‘that’s right’

‘so you have to go collect it, package it, and then give it to me?’

‘yes’

‘you can’t just give it to me now at the sale price?’

‘no’
