When I manage to give myself a headache trying to work out what additional addons for travel insurance and whether to book flights/accommodations that have some form of cancellation return or take the non refundable

Same here. But travel insurance doesn’t normally cover ‘cancel for any reason’ (change of mind), or might limit cancellation cover for pre-existing events (elderly family member getting sick for example).

So if my plans could possibly change - voluntarily - I tend to book hotels and flights that are refundable… only locking in non-ref when it would truly be something covered by insurance.
