Trying to do a last minute booking for NYE (some place other that SYD)

Tried PPT and no flights on the day we wanted and some flights operated by Waymos😳

Then tried HBA, flights good but accom disappearing rapidly. Got the last reasonable hotel room by the waterfront after my other 2 preferred ones were rapidly booked out

Why did I get this last minute itch?

The Fustercluck that is MEL Airport Arrivals pickup at T1/2/3. No wonder touts have business there. The whole thing needs nuking and start again. OK, maybe I'm spoilt with Changi, but I think if you had to design a pick up area for an airport of MEL's passenger levels, it would be a good start to take MEL and do the exact opposite.

On Thursday night faced with a long, slow moving Uber queue we opted for Didi which was also about $7-8 less. The problem is we did not heed my own advice to always book Didi from T4 (my excuse we had a fair bit of luggage, a pathetic excuse really). It took about 20-25 mins, mind you someone we pegged in the Uber queue only got into their Uber a few mins before us.

Traffic into the pickup area was devastatingly slow. People park there forever, instead of just 1-2 mins, they're sitting there for 10 mins and "authorised officers" do absolutely nothing, although if they did, they'd probably be subjected to intimidation.

And then there's the pedestrian crossing at the entrance to the area which blocks traffic flow in two ways - when pedestrians are crossing (of course), but noticed a new trick that people actually stop there for short periods as well. They just sit there even when pedestrians aren't crossing - presumably waiting for a spot to wait park in. We saw this happening several times. On one occasion two vehicles doing this just stayed there for about 3 mins before they moved - even though plenty of times with no pedestrians crossing. Meanwhile blocking other vehicles from having access, and I suspect jamming traffic back beyond the traffic lights. Just selfish a##@holes. One I think even was a taxi-van.
Hopefully the new drop off/pick up area in the multi storey car park will help fix this.

Doom scrolling.

They want this banned because it is a way of scrolling through negative news? No, no, no. I am scrolling through news reporting the truth not the lies they try to feed me.

It’s up to you. You have choices
Fantastic. So let's leave the cash option there with no surcharge.

If it ain't broke don't try to fix it.

I hear you.
I can close my eyes and remember as a child going with my parents as we drove to Tullamarine to say goodbye to friends/relatives who were flying off — and meeting others doing the same. (Yes boys and girls it was a thing) Then I open my eyes and 50+ years later the drop off and pick up is exactly the same.🤔

Hope so! It seems to work ok in T4 car park.

To be fair, the current design, with multiple lanes and loads of pick up bays, should work in theory. The big fail is accounting for human behaviour - people practically park in those spots for 5-10 mins, instead of waiting somewhere else until getting a call to proceed to pickup.

Also they could have had numbered pick up areas, so people would know where to stand, but that would still rely on people just picking up and not parking there.

Why, when people are checking in, do they have to bring everyone with them? Two or three families travelling together today and at the front desk today was five adults, two teens, three tweens and two younger kids and their bags, all crowding the desk like it's Costco and they are giving away samples. I've seen similar when buying tickets for things like museums or similar, everyone in the ticket line so it's much longer than necessary. One designated person, or two if multiple families, and the rest should step aside. Ie, if you're not the one paying or signing for something then go stand elsewhere

I tell Mr Denali to wait in the lobby while I get us checked in

For me, it was more of a thing @MARTINE to go to Tulla, just because you could, as it was about the only place open on a Saturday night in 1970-71!
My beau could pull up and park, we would ride the escalators then go home - and my folks never knew I ventured over the Yarra 🤭

No doubt while singing along the ‘Melbourne Airport Tullamarine’ song!

Our company driver would drive up and pick you up right at the terminal exit. Standing there one day arms lenth away from Maggie and one of her daughters.

Back in the day, when we were young and had a friend going on a holiday, we would all travel to the airport and make a day of it. ( we lived 1 hours drive away).

It was a great day out and I loved people watching and watching all those beautiful airplanes taking off. We would all go to the bar and have a farewell drink. We could park there for hours and I don't remember having to pay for parking.

I think this was when I first developed the love of airports and all things flying.

Agreed - it was a day out and - you are right - I don't think you had to pay to park.

I found some of my late father’s video footage of one such day out.

Remember:

The Jackaroo Bar and that you could be in the open airside (!) on the deck where adults smoked

You would watch friend/family after they boarded the plane and they would wave a ‘pick your color’ hankie which was so exciting as you see them ‘on the plane’!

Tullamarine opened 01.07.1970

Wife is housekeeper at motel.

Last week one of the rooms had poo flung all over the walls. What sort of disgusting filth behaves this way? And being drunk is not an excuse.

This motel has one room that is in poor condition that they save for what they feel could be troublesome customers.

My wife has had a good relationship this year with this couple managing the motel. They have had enough. They are retiring. Who knows who is going to manage motel next year and what sort of relationship wife will have with them.

Also I am against digital ID but Im not against some sort of register where filth like this are blacklisted from renting rooms.
