Whats the point of wearing a watch?

Generally, telling the time in a convenient manner.

Otherwise ... are you asking what something like an Apple watch will do? Daily, I use it to:

* Answer phone calls & speak etc when my phone isn't to hand
* Monitor my sleep
* Timers
* Alarm
* Monitor my parking time via connected app
* Account for exercise times and types
* Look at my calendar without needing my phone
* Check flight status with linked Flighty app
* Tap-pay with 4 different credit cards (brilliant - no more fumbling with phone or ... horrors! ... credit card)
* Tap-and-go with metro cards like Paris metro
* Read e-mails when phone not to hand
* Read & respond to texts when phone not to hand
* Check the weather on Windy app when phone not to hand
* Find my phone (it pings it). That's useful!
* If I fall and don't respond it will dial 000 and report position.
* More ...

(No wonder it goes through the juice!)

Basically, amongst other things, it relieves you of needing your phone right at hand ("hands free" ) and does a lot of things more conveniently than a phone.

Or maybe you just wanted the time bit?

I cant see why pulling phone out of pocket is so difficult to make payments - especially when different CC are in play

Not 'difficult', but contrast having to pull the phone out, get the payment thing going & tap, & phone back in pocket, Vs just click, select card (or just use default) and flick wrist near the reader. How many times do you get behind someone stuffing around trying to get their Apple Pay on the phone to work.

Or are you just having a bit of a lend?

2, actually.

Each to their own. My wrist feels naked without a watch.

Erm....... wrists! My automatic (no battery) watch sits on my left, and my Fitbit sits on my right. Fitbit is useful at night/in the dark as I can just flick my wrist and it'll light up and show the time. My automatic has a little bit of glow around the dial, but that relies on it having had enough light to glow up in the first place, plus also when you're half asleep less easy to read.

The service costs on my automatic would fund a new Apple watch each time ........ but I still prefer it.

Yes and no
I dont have a watch - no need, i can tell the time by pulling phone out of pocket. The phone has a permanently on screen which has the time on it.
The other reason is more a work reason - washing hands and putting gloves on all the time.

The people who are faffing around for phone at the checkout are distracted by other things. Having a watch wont help them.

The only one that the Watch can do better is the Fall function
Other than that anything the watch can do the phone can do better - without needing a watch.

Will do. We went the Lilly 2 because the Vivoactive 5 appears to be a 42mm face and just too large for MrsP's small wrist. The Lily 5 appears around 34mm and just right size for a small wrist. The time is readable without glasses.

Have always worn a watch
I currently wear Longines La Grande Classique with 24mm face and its light weight.
No numbers but the chips mark the hours so it is easy to tell the time without specs.

I would love a smart watch but even 34mm would be too big for me.

Hmmmm .. how do you find your phone if its somewhere nearby but you aren't sure where it is - or maybe you have left it somewhere.

a) Just keep looking, and maybe looking and looking, or
b) Tap the watch and the phone gives a long chime if its within range. If its not - you know you need a wider search!

So maybe that's 2 things ...

Watches do phone stuff better than a phone because - you don't need the phone!
Maybe try it and find out for yourself?

BTW I had stopped wearing a watch for 20 years before the smartwatch - I kept taking it off and putting it somewhere as it irritated my wrist.

• Backtrack (for hiking) on the Apple Watch Ultra

These work even if:

• Your phone is in a bag
• You’re away from the phone
• You’re in an accident and can’t reach the phone
