What are airports missing?

+1 tells me she would like to see a hairdresser and nail salon.

The problem for some businesses, for example a post office, is the rent. You will never pay it selling $1 stamps for $1.

I though Qantas First lounge did that ? The nails I mean

Nail place for sure. Sydney Int used to have one as I have used it.

Manicure and Shellac is always on my pre trip to do list but sometimes I never quite make it and this would save the hassle of trying to squeeze it in somewhere.

I don't understand. No time to tick off to do items elsewhere so plan to get to airport earlier so can get those things done there?.

Should be like any shopping mall. Get in and get out!!!. Quick as a flash please. No Dilii dally allowed. They should institute the no loitering rule through the the airport that is currently in place at the kerbside.

Won't necessarily get to the airport early but would use the dead time waiting around vs needing to find an hour in the lead up to being away on leave.

Yes quite valid to use dead time productively.

Im the opposite I prefer to Veg out. Actually in twisted kind of way, it would be better if airports are more like shopping malls with all kinds of services. That way everyone else can spend and leave veg out types like me alone.

For me, the answer is simple - a decent lounge which I have access to.

However for the times which I am outside those golden doors my wants are simple,

Comfortable seating outside the lounges,
Decent food / drink which does not cost the earth
Easy access to a power point
WIFI
A view of the planes.

It's funny how often that last one is missed, as airports turn more into shopping centers. TPE is probably the worst example, apart from the Chinese writing on signs, I could have been down at my local mall.

Agree with a lot of this. TPE is pretty bad in the "Shopping Mall with Airbridges Attached" stakes, although I think BKK was worse when I went through it about six years ago. May have improved since then (I hope!).

It's 2016 and free wifi and decent numbers of power points should be a given for any modern airport. Humanely priced food and drinks would also be something I appreciate. Same with adequate seating at the gates.

Would love an outdoor viewing deck to watch the planes come and go. Can anyone tell me if you have tarmac views from the swimming pool/bar at SIN?

In and out burger joint!
Library like San Fransisco
Movies on the roof like Las Vegas...... WiFi the sound in head phones like a drive in.
You snooze you lose your place on flight!
Tier lounges ie plebs, middle class and stupid expensive lounges!

Gym .....my God no. Although many people do display common sense, the "worse than feet on Bulkhead" thread shows there are many of our fellow travellers with a brain the size of pea and having been sat once next to someone with body odour that would kill an elephant at 200 paces, I would despise being sat next to someone admiring their biceps the whole flight whilst sharing with us all, their eau de cologne that would make an onion cry!

They have a gym at Changi which I have utilised a few times when having boring 6 hour stopovers. But I do know how to jump into a shower afterwards and stay for some refreshments. Usually I plan for this though and bring gym clothes that ends up in the bin when I am done. :D No need for BO on the plane

When it comes to Perth International Airport... well.. airside they need just about everything! Its one of the worst airports I have ever travelled through. No decent seating, no decent food, no bar, no nothing. All they have is some duty free shopping, toilets and hard seats.

Melbourne airport used to have a post office, was a handy service. Hair dresser would be great I reckon though I do know a lot of people get nervous they will miss their flight so would probably be too nervous to use one!

What would you do with wet swimming gear? Certainly not on JQ, the 7kg limit doesn't allow for wet togs, towel and goggles! ;)

Towel hire included in the price of course, and must come with one of those centrifuge machines, like at the Hilton Sydney, where you can spin most of the water out of the bathers.

OK, we've had some wonderful suggestions, at some airports you just need the basics. Jessore airport, Bangladesh: Toilet paper. :) Thankfully I always carry a roll with me travelling in those parts of the world.

MrP slept at Frankfurt airport overnight once. To this day I have no idea why he did that.
Something different? Save money? Couldn't be bothered getting a taxi there and back from hotel?

Was going to say bank, but depends on how much time you have before your flight, probably only good if you have a international wait of 2 hours or more

Oh you need those papers ... As long it's not thin tissue paper that you keep pulling and tearing.

Definitely a Barber. Most guys are in and out within 20-30 mins or less. Not sure if there would be enough time to kill for a hairdresser, but maybe one of those Blo Dry bars as well.

Not sure on the charges vs rent however. I suppose $40 max is what id pay for the convenience and not sure if the turnover would cover rent and wages, obviously depending on the airport.

Dont think I would ever use a gym before hopping on plane. having sweaty clothes in the carry on, no good.

Might work. I had a horrid mental picture of overweight elites employing a pair of quick dry, lightweight sluggos. The sight alone would be enough to have some arrested for terrorism offences!

Both SYD and MEL International terminals have banks. I've used them before to do some last minute things before leaving the country (very convenient).

JNB has a very nice barber shop landside.

OTOH you do wonder about getting longish hair cut when a large percentage of the client base wears a "buzz cut" (or less)
Turned out fine.

Happy wandering

Fred

I indulged with a complimentary trim when I was in the VS lounge in JFK last year. It was strange to watch planes whilst having a hair cut, but it was great. Hair cut, quick shower, quick bite to eat, a few of their delicious coughtails, then a little golf cart all the way back to the DL gates ;)

Great way to travel. Often wondered why QF didn't include one (I guess it would add to their wages bill).
