An experience with cancelling the westpac mastercard? does that auto cancel the Amex, or can the Amex be kept without the mastercard account. Supposed to be separate, but just want to make sure.

I believe you can hold the AMEX on its own, and you can cancel the Westpac MasterCard through online services.

Agree, given they are now really seperate cards (rather than a companion card) I see no reason you can't do this.

Thanks for the help, both.
After asking the question i did some research for the produce. Amex only advertised on westpac website, not amex website, as a companion product. I'm happy to try to cancel the mastercard as it is a waste. But will think about it as I do like priority pass, which seems to be a mastercard benefit

I used to have my annual fee paid for/ free as i have a home loan with Westpac but i am wondering if they will still cover the Amex fee now they are split Otherwise i may as well cancel my Altitude Amex and keep my Explorer.

This is what the Westpac site says, check out the savings tab.

Home loan package - save by packaging your home loan | Westpac

Given $250 is just the fee for the Mastercard would suggest that's all they will cover.

I’m afraid it won’t be covered now that AMEX is not issued directly by the bank. I’m in the same boat and hoping for AMEX to offer bonus points for retaining the card otherwise no point keeping it.

The only reason I still have the black MC (tucked somewhere in a drawer) is Westpac keeps waving the annual fee.

Banks are no longer allowed to offer incentives if you threaten to cancel.

Officially they are not allowed and that’s a problem for them so they’ll have to go back to the drawing board and find creative solutions to retain customers within the new boundaries.

I guess though that this comes down to language, if rather than threatening to cancel you say you are evaluating options (of which cancellation is just one, i.e. you don't explicitly threaten to cancel), can you offer me anything to retain the card?

I don't think they're allowed to offer incentives even when you ask for them. I believe you need to apply for say credit limit increases on your own.

So much has changed.
