Western Sydney Airport (WSI) Discussion

One of our writers, Arun, got the chance to fly out on the inaugural Western Sydney - Gold Coast flight!

You can read about his experience of the brand new Western Sydney Airport here:

I do like that the baggage carousels are designed to give you a good look at the bags on the opposite side. It's always a 50-50 which side you should stand on, and someone picking up my bag before I see it is one those anxiety generating things at airports for me.

Anyone know what’s responsible for delaying JQ373? Sitting in the terminal looking at the bird

I assume NZ crew these as same day returns?
Yes, on most flights between NZ and AU they do with very few exceptions where the aircraft overnights in an AU port or Perth. Typically the A320s fly 2 round trips per day (so 4 flights total) the crew will only operate a single round trip.

I gather some planes overnight in NZ rather than Aus?

And do the runs from there in the am. And arrive late night NZ time beforeRinse and repeat

Most of Air NZs narrow body fleet overnight in NZ. Leave NZ around 6am and get to AU around 7-8am, leave AU around 9am and get to NZ around 2pm, leave NZ around 4pm, get to AU around 5-6pm, finally leaving AU around 7pm and getting to NZ at midnight.

Whilst today’s WSI aircraft isn’t following this pattern, in future the WSI rotation will fit into this first part of the day.

Sydney's new status as a two-airport city is already causing confusion for some travellers.
Julie Lundmark, from Sweden, headed to Melbourne for the weekend from Sydney Airport but was surprised to discover her return flight landed at the brand new Western Sydney International Airport (WSI). The airport, which has been decades in the making, began operating passenger flights on Sunday. Ms Lundmark and her friend were on Jetstar flight JQ373 when they realised the mistake.

"The funny thing is we googled because we didn't recognise the name 'west airport' that was on the boarding pass, and we googled it and it took us to the normal Sydney airport.
And an idiot from Kiwiland

One man who disembarked flight NZ165 from Auckland said he thought he was travelling to Western Australia. "I got confused, I saw Western Sydney," he said. "I thought it was Western Australia, and I'm meant to be in Perth, but look, it's still pretty fun, so we'll make the best of it. "I realised by the time I got on the flight that that's not where it was going, but we'll figure it out.

When QR Qatar start operating to WSI expect more stories like this.
May get some with FJ with passengers who go to the wrong airport to board a flight to Fiji

Same with QF. Usually a NZ based cabin crew and they do a NZ-AU-NZ trip.
But have had AU SYD based crew on MEL-CHC-MEL.

Plenty of people end up in Austria in a similar way...
