"... we'll shortly announce a major investment to improve our Frequent Flyer program"

But she acknowledged the biggest bug bear for the scheme’s 15 million members, was the difficulty in getting premium cabin seats on premium routes internationally with their points.

“That’s a problem we’ve really been looking at over the past 12 months of how do we solve this, how do we ensure we keep our member engagement high?” Ms Wirth said.

“This is what we’ve been trying to solve, and today we can indicate there will be an announcement a few weeks down the track which will help solve this pain point and introduce a new flight rewards product.”

She provided few other details, except for the fact the new product would be in addition to the classic rewards program.[/I]

This all but confirms a tiered model coming. Whilst CR will remain, I really doubt the number of seats remain the same when pax can be induced to spend 20-50% more points to get a flight they want.

If the quantity of CR seats stay the same then great, if not then it's essentially a deval.

This one was super interesting to me. It looks like a complete acknowledgement of two things:
  1. Qantas' dealing with disruptions has been abysmal from both an operational perspective, and from customers' financial perspective.
  2. While the listed benefits are pretty good, QFF members have been very unhappy with how those benefits have been delivered.
I wonder if this does actually end up being more than just a slide in a corporate presentation.

Which makes it time to start speculating on what the prices will be.

I know the Transpac market the best.

On East Coast Australia to West Coast USA in J, currently saver award rates are around 80K (eg Aeroplan) to 110K (Qantas).

Anytime awards on the North American carriers are around 200K (United) to 450K+ (AA/Delta).

I'm guessing they'll price the new tier towards the mid to higher end of that spectrum — 300-400K. Still a substantial saving over points plus pay and in line with the market, but high enough that it is commercially viable for Qantas to hand them out en masse.

Really wonder where the availability will come from.. I can take a cost effective stab at it but I'm just cynical :D

While everyone seems to have (as usual) acquired their own questionable crystal ball to do forecasting, I had a look into mine.

420,000 new JQ seats coming online maybe equals ability to redeem more of them with QFF points but at a higher rate than CR.

And this
  • Better recovery – we've increased what we provide when there are significant delays. This includes giving our people better tools to fix problems on the spot to support the amazing job they do every day.
Well no water or food vouchers on a 3 hour delayed flight today in 36 degree weather in Melbourne.

What worries me is Qantas raising the bar for Gold/Platinum status. This would be a huge kick in the teeth to those who are currently spending their money on DSC to attain/retain a status that is (secretly) moving further away.

Couldn't happen, could it?

Status is tied to flights, not dollars, so should be inflation proof.

If they can introduce Advantage Awards similar to what SQ is doing and provide more seats with a similar % uplift in prices compared to SQ Saver awards, that would be good.

Chances are that QF would be at least double the points required compared to the Classic Awards.

I think it's more likely to go the other way, with status becoming easier to attain and possibly with boosts provided by credit cards or other spending. QFF got a bit of a taste of how lucrative non-flying status earning options could be during the pandemic. Now that the status extensions are ended I think it's likely that they'll look to capture some of that again.

I know...do you think they actually believe this nause and worse, think we do? 🫣🫤...maybe like just about everyone else in one world they are joining.....AVIOS......🍾🎊..I told you first!! 😜

I’d say no. With SQ the number of Saver awards seems to have reduced with some routes now only available as Advantage and some even only released on Waitlist Advantage.

Are you referring to F or A380 Suites? If so, I can understand. I would be surprised if it applies to J, though. Then again, everyone just jumps on to J Saver as soon as it is available ...

With QR involved in the Avios cartel I very much doubt that QF goes down that route and I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole Avios mob align more with QR going forward

Well it was QR who moved into the AVIOS route away from their own FFP to join BA and IB and more latterly AY. Ofcourse QF love EK to much to ever show true OneWorld allegiance..😜
