Weight limit for "personal item"

Frustratingly, Singapore Airlines does not state a weight limit for the second carry-on item on an economy ticket, the personal item. The phrasing on the website suggests that the personal item is in addition to the carry-on, so presumably this means that the personal item weight is also in addition to the 7 Kg economy carry-on weight limit.

It's been a while since I flew with them; do they weigh the personal item and what are peoples experiences with the weight of this item. It makes no sense that a weight is not stated - 3 Kg max? 5 Kg max? 7 Kg max? No maximum?

The thing with the personal item is that it is meant to be smallish. If it is too big, then it gets counted against carry-on weight limit.

My personal item is always a laptop. Small but not so light. Never a problem (laptops seem to be sacrosanct everywhere, irrespective of weight).

Oh, I was forgetting about Jetstar...

What sort of weight would you say with the bag, cables, etc.?

I'm a bit late to the thread but SQ rarely enforces this rule at check in, at boarding I've never seen them enforce it.

If you're worried them enforcing it, there's a few options:
1: Bundle your excess item(s) into a jumper and carry it in your hands at check-in and let them weigh your carry on bag if required - they will never weigh a jumper.
2: Put your excess carry on item(s) in a temporary luggage locker, check-in and pick up your excess carry on items and proceed to security
3: Give your excess carry on item(s) to a travel companion or person dropping you off at the airport, check-in and return to that person after check-in is complete

Thanks for the response.

1. I am planning to take my jacket with big pockets to do just that; it will be winter so nothing too strange there.

2. This is very helpful. I was hoping a friend can hold my bag so I can get it from them after check-in but it's likely I'll make it to the airport by myself so this could really help.. I wasn't aware of luggage lockers so will check if the airport has one.

Thanks.

Sorry for being a bit late with the response, but other priorities intervened (life unfortunately).

My laptop bag would probably weigh about 3 Kg with everything included, and the only airline that ever weighed it was the Qantas LCC. Jetstar (no surprises there).

So if you're not flying Jetstar, I wouldn't worry about it. But having a jacket with big pockets is always a good idea. They'll never weigh that!
