Hi,

I'm new here and I was just wondering what are some cheap ways to upgrade to business class without having to buy the ticket outright?
What do most people do? Earn points via credit cards, pay for an upgrade at the counter? Bid for an upgrade close to date?

With those mileage brokers is there certain airlines that allow it? I know in general people don't recommend it.

look for frequent flyer programs that offer bonuses when you buy points/miles - American, United & Aviance Lifemiles programs do these. the advantage is you are buying tickets outright that guarantee you'll be seated in business.

some airlines offer bidding services (Virgin Aus, Etihad, Malaysian to name a few) that allow you to put in a bid for an upgrade against your economy ticket, often you won't find out until very close to departure if you've suceeded

pointhacks blog has some good guides around these options in addition to searching on AFF

Welcome to the forum Purkulator,

you ask some questions that really take many pages / days to answer - there is so much to learn. It is a complex business :) If your aim is for frequent trips into the future, take the time to study this forum relentlessly. If it is just for a single trip, then post a thread asking your specific questions, making sure you include basics such as what sort of trips you mean (ie is it a Brisbane to Sydney trip or an around the world adventure. Etc etc. Also say if you are already a member of a certain airline alliance, already have some points, etc.

Hello!

Just expanding on yohy?!'s points above, a few suggestions and points about upgrading and flying business class relatively cheaply:

1. Buying Miles from an airline program

As mentioned above, certain programs offer the ability to purchase miles (occasionally with a bonus miles or at a discount). American Airlines AAdvantage is good for travel on oneworld airlines (and a few non-oneworld partners like Etihad Airways) and Avianca Lifemiles is good for Star Alliance airlines.

These tickets are generally only available if there are award seats available on the flight, so you may need to be flexible with the dates and routes you want to fly. For example, I was looking at a PER-LHR journey a couple of years ago and the only available option in business was Perth-Sydney-Tokyo-London.

Before using this option, it's important to check how many miles you will need (most of the 'award charts' quote based on one-way tickets so you'll often need to double it for a return journey), how much it will cost and how that compares to the cost of a cash ticket.

Pros:
Confirmed business class seat upon booking
Significantly cheaper than buying the ticket outright

Cons:
Availability is subject to award seats being available, so will probably not work during peak travel times or routes (school holidays or in-demand routes) and flexibility with travel dates and routes is required
Miles required are subject to change with short notice
Purchase subject to currency fluctuations and foreign transaction fees

2. Earning miles from credit card offers / everyday spending then using them for award tickets and upgrades

You can earn a lot of miles very quickly through credit card bonus offers and daily spending on a credit card that is linked (or allows transfers to) a frequent flyer account.

These miles are then redeemed for either 1) An award seat outright if available, 2) Upgrade requests (fixed number of miles required) or 3) Upgrade bids (flexible number of miles required but subject to competing bids).

With upgrade requests, many airlines (including Qantas) will process them based on your status with the airline so if you do not hold status you will be very low on the pecking order. Qantas also process upgrade requests before considering point bids.

Pros:
Earn hundreds of thousands of miles in a short space of time
Frequent flyer redemptions can be good value because business award tickets and upgrades are usually only 2x the cost of economy award tickets

Cons:
Applying for multiple cards in a short space of time will hurt your credit rating significantly
Outright award seats subject to availability (as per above)
Upgrade award seats may be processed based availablilty and then status with the airline so not guaranteed (and very low chances unless you are a top-tier member)
Some benefits may not be provided (e.g. extra baggage allowance) if processed at airport

3. Cash upgrade bids

As you have mentioned most airlines now offer the ability to offer cash upgrade bids online, or occasionally, buy up at the airport (I think British Airways offers this).

Pros:
Cheaper to purchase as airlines are trying to upsell otherwise empty seats

Cons:
Airline retains discretion to reject bid so not guaranteed
Often processed last as airlines want to sell seats to last minute business flyers
Some benefits may not be provided if processed at airport (as above)

4. Fly to/from cities outside Australia

Unfortunately in Australia we are hit with high business class airfares compared to other parts of the world. Flying out of particular places in South East Asia or flying the trip in reverse (e.g. Europe-Australia-Europe) is often significantly cheaper than an Australian-based departure. Good places for these journeys are Bangkok, coughet, Manila and Colombo (in Asia) and Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen (in Europe).

You can then book a separate cheap ticket to position to these locations.

Pros:
Much cheaper than paying for business class out of Australia
Confirmed business class seat for the long-haul portion of your journey

Cons:
Need to buy two separate tickets, which means you may not be protected in the case of a delay
May need to collect your bag at the intermediate stop - so will need to set time aside to do so (and visa costs to enter the country, if applicable). I tend to spend the night in the intermediate stop just to provide buffer for delays.

5. Mileage brokers

Generally, the terms and conditions of a frequent flyer program prevent you from transferring miles (except, in some cases, between family members). Buying and selling miles comes at a huge risk as accounts can be suspended or closed and miles forfeited (and in such cases, you have no recourse against the seller or the airline). I'm not aware of any airline that permits the transfer of miles from a third party.

I hope this helps!

Purkulator, give up on the idea of mileage brokers now unless you want to have your account suspended and loose all of your points.

Welcome to AFF Purkulator,
I like Life Miles. Yes, you have to be flexible but when you pay your money you (usually) know what you are getting.

Thanks a lot everyone. Seems like this forum has a lot of nice people in the community :)
So I gather that people generally don't just buy a business class ticket outright of course unless they have the cash to burn?

This may still be an option for people chasing SC.

Just following from all the good suggestions above, does anyone know what are the options for buying business class flights on Cathay Pacific (MEL-HKG specifically)
From what I gather there is no asia miles rewards programs in Australia but there are some cards that allow points transfer e.g. ANZ 3 points = 1 Asia mile which can either be used for upgrades or flight purchases directly
EDIT: can't post links

Buying directly:
Currently there is a 90 day early bird special (25%) off
EDIT: can't post links

Don't rule this out altogether. There are sometimes great deals on revenue (paid) business class tickets, although rarely from Australia. These can be useful if you are willing to consider cheap 'positioning' flights to Asia to connect to the cheap long hauls.

In particular, Finnair regularly run sales that can get you from Singapore to Europe in business class for ~$2500aud return. Sign up to their emailing list (saying your location is Singapore) if you're interested.

And also keep an eye on the 'Cheap International Airfares' section of these forums.

I've found Cathay Pacific to be tricky because their prices tend to be higher than other carriers.

Have you checked whether there are any award seats when you wish to travel (such as ba.com or awardnexus)? If so, buying miles could be an option - for example I think you can redeem 60,000 miles for Cathay Pacific return flights from Australia-Hong Kong (30,000 each way). I don't know how much it would cost as I don't have an Alaska account but this link (Alaska Airlines Buy Mileage Plan Buy Miles Up To 40% Bonus February 20 – April 6, 2017 | LoyaltyLobby) indicates you could buy 84,000 miles for $1773 USD ($2350 AUD), so you may wish to explore this option.

Otherwise, you can also transfer American Express Membership Reward points to Asia Miles on a 1:1 basis. When considering this, also consider whether transferring the points to a partner airline which can also access award seats (e.g. Amex MR also transfer on a 1:1 basis to Malaysia Airlines Enrich, a oneworld partner). In your case (MEL-HKG) I think Asia Miles is better value though.

Would buying miles to purchase flights or upgrade risk voiding the entire flight altogether as some has said? Otherwise 2350AUD is really good considering full price is 4000+
what about purchasing discounted business class flights from 3rd parties that use miles to purchase them?

We travel long haul out of and into OZ in J using either Qantas points or AA or AS (Alaskan airlines) purchased miles, we go to HKG a bit and many times gone out of there on Oneworld carriers as award seats to USA and Europe in J for 2 are virtually non existent, other times we have done a circle Pacific, low points fees Y daylight flight to HKG the J rest of the way to USA on CX and direct back to OZ on QF as a second booking as the fees are virtually non existent.
A number of times we have done OZ to HKG return in J using AS miles cost was around $1750 per pax, twice we did OZ to Europe it was about $2800 per pax.
Excellent info here on AS miles.

I don't have an AS account, a flight from MEL to HKG return business class is 80 000 AA each
If I was to get 3, how much would 240 000 points cost including bonuses?
Bit of a newbie here, but with point purchases are there any restrictions as to the choice of dates, when to reserve etc? Or its same as buying outright (can book any flight any time for any passenger)

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Both AA and AS are free to join, you need to be a member for I think 21 days before purchasing miles?

its best to buy when the bonus miles offers are on like this here info on using buying AS miles here.To fly in award J you need to read up on the leg work you have to do to save huge $, its not offered on a plate. pointhacks.com.au is best place to find out how it all works. Getting 3 x J out of OZ best of luck with that, getting 3 x J out of HKG a breeze. AS will let you have a stopover each way, AS award chart

CX flights cannot be seen on AS you need to find award flights on the likes of QF, BA or JL then call to book.

I like many others on AFF find the J CX ward flights on BA or JL or QF then call AS to book, other than QF all are free to join!. At times you may find them - but not there called "phantom seats".

What sort of restrictions are imposed on point upgrades and purchases? So you mention from AU to HKG is rare sonis that based on experience, demand? How do you know what are your chances?

If this is directed my way I don't use points for upgrades as its not only a lottery but more points are usually required than normal. I use total points only so have no problem with chances. Yes more than one J seat can be hard to find but much better if you are gold or better status, I also use award Nexus to see what is available too.

AS miles best value for flying J. Read up on it, it took me over a year to get my head around it and that was over 3 years ago.

Just booked 5 x J perth - jfk over xmas return on cathay. Wouldnt fly any other way
