Democracy costs money - such is life.

The result was 55/45% - Proof that there is a valid debate and cause to assess the public view. If the result had been 90/10%, then you'd be kicking the politicians for wasting money on proving the obvious.

They did also have a by-election same day, so wasn't a total waste.

The Greens look like beating Labor for the seat of Fremantle. :shock:

Seems it was a case for the silent majority this time. I was in WA a week or so ago and there seemed to be campaigns everywhere on radio and TV getting people together in favour of daylight saving. Everyone I spoke to was in favour (all in Perth but that's 75% of the WA population isn't it?) but they all believed it would get voted down. So nearly 100% of country folk and a good chunk of the city folk (many who may have publically supported it!) must have voted against it. Oh well... the will of the people...

I don't recall anyone, outside parliament advocated it. Three and a half years ago, out of the blue was a proposal for a three year trial followed by a referendum.

I don't really see the problem with having a vote on an issue that really is a lifestyle issue for the whole state.

I have a major issue with votes on "lifestyle issues" when that money could be spent on essential services but then I have grown up in an environment where DS is the norm and was never debated and was barely even mentioned other than the excitement of getting an extra hour's sleep once per year as a kid...

Makes me wonder if we are now going to be stuck with the OLCI 23 hour bug all summer, every summer, now.

Why? It was only a problem, when DST was introduced....

It makes the customer service lines that run on AEDST business hours almost useless to the West - my former employer ran a help line from 830am to 4pm. That means in summer it was closed by 1pm WA time. Okay it's only an hour but you get the picture. I find it a pain having to wait until 12 for businesses to open over there to call. Email is okay - just don't expect a fast response!

Indeed, I thought it was because the OLCI thing pretended WA was not on DST.

Maybe the referendum was a waste of money but I just cannot understand people not wanting to have daylight saving in the summer.

I have been living in Brisbane for 11 months and in the summer the sun is up before 5:00am and it gets dark ~6:30pm while in the winter it gets dark ~5:00pm or a little earlier. Most people don't change their working hours so if you finish work after 5:00pm in the summer there is hardly any daylight left and Brisbane is pretty much dead after this time.

In Sydney and Melbourne I could have 3-4 hours of sunlight after work which is more than enough to play a game of golf or do some work around the house. And when you get to Europe places like Greece have daylight saving and in the summer it does not get dark until ~10:00pm and places like Scotland it does not get dark until ~11:30pm.

I guess the problem for Qld and WA (and why NT never countenances DST) is the tropical areas which are basically 12 hours of sunlight year round so no benefit from DST. Tropical countries don't indulge either do they?
I don't think Japan has DST even though it's temperate.

I notice the QF timetable has not been adjusted yet. It still thinks WA has Daylight Savings this summer.

I heard a story many years ago that the reason they don't have daylight saving in Queensland is that when Jo Bjelke-Petersen was in power he thought the sun rose from his a*** and he wasn't getting up an hour earlier for anyone.
