Hello there,

Let me start by saying I'm new to these forums. My wonderful housemate suggested I come here to meet you all. I feel bad that I'm starting with a request to you, but I have a rather urgent question for you all if you think you can help.

Before I ask for your help, I should tell you a little bit about myself.

I'm a happy person. I'm bright and bubbly. I'm also incredibly dedicated, passionate and hardworking. You need to have all of those qualities to be a medical student. We're pretty dedicated people - we're no longer in degrees where grades only matter for your transcript. Everything you learn in Medicine matters for the future. Not for our own love of science or worldly curiosity but because we will ultimately be responsible for what happens in someone else's life. That's pretty scary but that was what I signed up for almost a year ago.

That said, I love Medicine. It is the most fulfilling thing I have ever done. I get to speak with great people everyday, some of whom are living with conditions I wouldn't wish upon my enemy. These people inspire me to do my absolute best.

Seeing people receive great care in Australia is amazing. It also makes me that much more aware of the less-than-adequate care that is affordable to our fellow humans across the world. While I have given money to charity for much of my life, I thought I should use some of my adulthood to help others in ways that money cannot. This is why I decided to volunteer at the Crystal Eye Clinic in Ghana this January. There, I will see 100-300 Ghanaians, all of whom would otherwise have zero access to sight-saving services. I have been completing training for this program for a number of months. But don't worry, I won't be performing any surgery - I will be helping out with patient education on the myriad eye conditions that Ghanaians face. I have sourced 500 pairs of glasses to donate to the eye clinic to help these people see again. I am fundraising to pay for eye surgery for those who need it.

So what I'm hoping you will be able to me with is getting to Ghana. With your Donations of QANTAS frequent flyer points, we can together empower Ghanaians. A total of 200 000 points is required for a return flight. I spoke with a QANTAS rep and they were happy for you to donate to my account. If you think you could help, please, please send me a personal message.

You might ask, why sight?
Well, to that, I ask -
“What would it be like to go without sight?”
I'm a visual learner. My desk is currently covered with colour-coded post-its for my 80% Barrier exam.
Of the 25 million people who live in Ghana, more than 800 000 are visually impaired or blind and of those, 75% of cases are preventable and treatable. This is in a nation where 50% of the workforce is in agriculture or industry, where 30% are unemployed and where the GDP per capita is $2500 US. In Ghana, sight is essential for prosperity.

This is why I am asking you to be inspired by this volunteer effort. I cannot get to Ghana on my own. While I do not have the monetary means to make this happen on my own, I am not asking for a handout. I came across a quote recently by Lilla Watson – “If you have come to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is tied up with mine, let us walk together”. Let us walk together to empower Ghanaians in their own lives.

For each person who assists us, there will be a password-entry online collection of photos. For those of you who donate 20 000 points or more, you may select an 8” by 6” photo for printing.

If you wish to follow our progress (even if you can't or do not want to donate points), I will be blogging at ghanavision.wordpress.com. You can follow me on twitter @ghanavision as well.

Most gratefully,

Brooke Sachs

I'd feel more comfortable to hear from the rep in question, or even Red Roo... if it is in fact possible to transfer QFF to anybody outside of Qantas guidelines of "Family Transfers"

Frequent Flyer - Using Points - Family Transfers

I thought it was against the T&C's to request a transfer to a membership with no "family" link...?

Frequent Flyer - About the Program - Terms & Conditions

(b) the Member transferring the Points must specify the name and Membership number of, and nature of their relationship with, the Eligible Family Member receiving the Points;

Any comment Red Roo...? Qantas...?

@BrookeSachs, I don't like your chances of getting points from anyone here without further clarification from an authorized representative from Qantas...

I like your optimism shintaro10x, but my "fraud alert" has gone off the scale reading this.

200,000 miles seems excessive too.

Me too, but lets see if anyone from Qantas can confirm first ;)

Also the room mate who is an established member.

It is sad we are all doubtful but I guess that is the world we live in today.

Hi all,

I can see why you might think 200 000 points is excessive - it's the number I found when I plugged Sydney to Ghana into the frequent flyer page on my Qantas account. I think this is because part of the flight is with a partner airline.
When I spoke to the representative at Qantas, I asked if there were a way to waive the family transfer for this points drive, as I know Qantas gets a lot of requests for sponsored flights. the kind woman (I think her name was Rachel) told me that usingthe family transfer would be fine, as long as you referred to me as 'other' in the family category. I also thought that slightly odd, but as she said it was okay, I thought it fine to believe her. That said, obviously feel free to get a second opinion. also - I have used my real name so if you wish to Google me for my entire life history, I won't be offended!

Thank you for replying. And I actually quite like your scepticism - it shows you're all thoughtful people :)

Just checked and it is 84000 points syd-jburg so how can it be 200000 points. Also do one world fly to Ghana.

Hi again -
Thanks so much for finding the number of points to Jburg - that's really helpful :)
I hope also that you can see that this is not solely about the number of points - if it turns out only to be 100 000 points then that's great because it halves the amount I have to find. It would be wonderful if I only need that many! The more important factor, for me at least, is that great things happen when great people get together...inquisitive minds like your own to seek solutions to problems we face. I saw an inequality and decided I could be a small part of the solution. I hope that some of you might see this this as that and only that - an innocent, perhaps naive request from a young mind to come together to improve something very much within our grasp.

That request is triggering all my scam alarms.

But anyway BA do fly to Accra, Ghana. So you can actually price this trip online. So a mixture of Qantas/BA flights can be done for 184,000 if you went via London.

Oh! And I realise now that I forgot to mention that 'urgent' means before November 20 as I leave January 1, need to have everything finalized for the volunteer program before Dec 1 but must have flights before I can get my Visa. So there is still a few days for hearty discussion first :)

I know BA have flown to Accra in the past. Having had a family member who has worked in Ghana before, he had to go through places like London on the way there to get a Visa from the embassy before he could head to Ghana, however he could fly through JHB on the way home.

Wow - I understand why you think I'm a scammer - it makes sense that you'd be wary. I guess it's just a little confronting because I don't know how to prove to you that I'm an ordinary 21 year old medical student who is trying to do something good. I present at high schools about mental health in my role as a Reach Out youth ambassador, I teach migrants English as a home tutor with Mission Australia, I go to health conferences and cultural immersion camps in order to learn about things that relate to Medicine. I will hopefully one day bw a doctor (if I pass my exams) so I hardly want to make you think that those of us in health are bad people. yet I have very few ways in this forum to convince you that I really am that person... you don't have to believe me. You don't have to help me fly to Ghana. I only hope that you might one day at least accept that I am trying to do something positive - and if you support that AND have spare points, then you may consider helping.

Thanks for the opportunity Brooke however I will pass on this occasion... As I believe many others will do the same due to the fact that your request is triggering off everybody's "Scam Alarms" around here...

Also since family transfers are only permitted once every 12 month period, hence they are "too valuable" to be used on your risky request... All be it for such a genuine cause you seem to be working forward to...

Good luck with your trip anyway...

As a side note, I will openly admit I hit the "Report Post" button about an hour ago, I've seen moderator activity since then in other areas of the forums, unsure why one has not yet weighed in.

Well there are some links around and it appears to be a legit person.. Whether the request stays on AFF is another thing though..

Sad thing is, the Name may be real. But it would be easy to set up a fake QFF account with that name. (QFF doesn't check) then purchase a ticket from that account in any name you wish after grifting points.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Very true... it's a pity we are in a society where we are always the devils advocate...

A confirmation from Red Roo would go a long way. I am sure people here would donate if they had spare points knowing it was for a genuine cause. I've given and received such generosity to/from members here in the past.
