A family member received a phone call today for flights on Sunday operated by Qantas and Emirates (Qantas ticket & Qantas codeshare). The flights are in Economy and are to Paris via SIN and DXB.

They were offered a routing via Melbourne, adding a fifth segment, with an upgrade MEL-SIN but having to pay for accommodation at Singapore themselves.

On Sunday both flights SYD-SIN are completely sold out, with all four Emirates and Qantas flights SYD-DXB sold out in Economy and Premium Economy.

It would be acceptable to fly the following day if it involved a complimentary upgrade.

What is the best avenue of suggesting this as an alternative? Call centre?

It would certainly be cheaper than offering a hotel, meals, transfers and possible EU compensation.

Thanks!

Ring the person/call centre who called you and propose your suggestion. Do it early and who knows what might happen.

Cheers, that was quick. Apparently Qantas have upgraded their call centre network and that department can't take inbound calls anymore. So if you can't access the only non-airport staff who have the authority to perform such a change I'm trying to establish the best bet. I wonder if you can call airport ticket sales...

Note EU compo does not apply for these flights as both Emirates and Qantas are non-EU airlines and the flights are not from the EU. Either of these conditions being true would make them candidates for compensation.

It would be acceptable to fly the following day if it involved a complimentary upgrade to business class. There are 32 seats on the 6am Emirates flight unallocated, according to Expert Flyer. Under the Qantas code it shoes J7/D7/C7. On the Emirates code it shows I7 when you can't even purchase a Y fare the day before.

What is the best avenue of suggesting this as an alternative? Call centre? At check-in?

It would certainly be cheaper than offering a hotel, meals, transfers and possible EU compensation in terms of involuntary denied boarding as well as flying one less segment.

Thanks ahead of time!

I know we all want to screw the airline out of as much as possible...... but seriously, I'd take the upgrade and pay the $200 for a hotel!

Spend a night in Geylang for SIN$70, done it before no problems at all.

Have you since been in touch with our Reservations team? They're available 24/7 on 131313 and would be happy to discuss your options. :)

this is another example where we need strong compensation regulations similar to EU261. passengers should be accommodated on another airline.

back to the case in point... they received a call from qantas... were they actually denied boarding, or just offered the choice? it doesn't sound like they have been off loaded yet, but are seeking volunteers.

presumably they can still just turn up for the flight ex syd as usual and will be accommodated on the flight.

i don't think it would be worth flying to MEL, then paying for SIN accommodation for an upgrade in the shortest segment of the itinerary.

BOTTOM LINE: if they don't want to accept the offer... just fly as planned. if you can get a full upgrade...MAKE SURE IT IS GUARANTEED, VIA EMAIL. we've had reports here before where an upgrade has been promised and then there is no record at the airport... or it's turned out that the upgrade has been subject to 'space available'.
