Was wondering the other day if there is a way of finding out what percentage of frequent flyers are Platinum, Gold, Silver and Red. Been unable to find any information on this. Does anyone know this, or have an opinion on it? I presume Virgin would want to keep it close to their chest.

I doubt these numbers are published anywhere - such information is commercially sensitive

Spare a day, got to the airport and sit by the boarding gates and watch who lines up in the PB lane and general lane.

Ah, but I am platinum and I don't bother with the priority boarding unless the flight looks very full and I don't think I will have space for my bag.

And there's bound to be plenty of non-WP/SG's trying to use the priority queue, and all it takes is a bored person doing the BP scanning to just let them through.

Sitting around watching a priority boarding gate will not give you accurate figures unfortunately.
