Virgin CEO joins calls for international borders to reopen, requests plan from government

I personally find those comments absolutely shameful- peoples' lives should always go first, full stop.

So yes, they're disgusting- exactly like their lousy catering and mediocre staff. But hey, each to their own!

You really need to read her entire statement / message. As usual, the media and the Twitter / Facebook lynch mob take things out of context.

I guess you were standing there with placards in front of Anglicare or Catholic Care homes before the pandemic, drawing attention to the shocking living condition (and unnecessary deaths) in their facilities? You were standing along side the nurses unions when they were fighting for better patient ratios? Or has this "all lives matter at all costs" position of yours only come about since this current virus came along?

Supposedly, three million people have died from this virus. Are you honestly naive enough to think that nobody in this country will again? Just like they do with every other virus?

I'm 100% in agreeance with the CEO statement (we need a clear plan) and it's a shame it's been taken out of context but it clearly wasn't the right way of putting it in the first place.

Here in the great state of Queensland (joking), we track the influenza cases and 2020 was basically a flat line after the lockdown, I guess it'll now become unacceptable to see that line rise and I'm sure the media/social media will pile on if it does.

If anyone either wants to bash their head or have a laugh (depending on how you take it), check out Twitter #boycottvirgin (currently trending number two in Australia). Some of the comments are hilarious, some saying they'll boycott Virgin having previously boycotted Qantas, I guess they're lucky Rex is now flying domestically, Sharp better not but something silly in the AFR tomorrow.

It's certainly a great indicator of how brainwashed the Australian public is. Boycott the second biggest airline in the country that has only just recovered from administration? Put thousands of people out of work and subject the country to a single national airline? Because the CEO made an intelligent statement that is based on fact and medical advise? Incredible what we've turned into.

The frustrating part is that vaccines are being distributed, however parts of North Queensland are now finding that they've hit 50% vaccination in communities and that's the limit of those who want it. The very people we have been protecting by sabotaging our futures and way of lives (ie the over 50's) have now decided they don't want the vaccine that will get us through this. Sorry, but we've done enough and it's time for a few hard truths.

Until everyone had their fair chance to get vaccinated- with a decent vaccine, that is and not Boris Johnson’s leftovers.

Both Pfizer and Moderna have shown near 100% effectiveness against serious hospitalisation and death so it’s not too much to expect to get the chance for one of those shots before our governments open the borders- same governments that dragged out purchase of said vaccines in the first place (I’m an Aussie who lives in NZ but both governments could have acted much quicker and more effectively in my eyes).

If someone is dumb/ credulous/ naive enough to not accept the vaccine for whatever silly reason, then that is on them. But exposing us all to the virus only to allow certain industries to make some cash a few months earlier than they would if we waited until everybody had the chance for a shot, that’s completely reckless in my eyes.

So has “Boris Johnson’s leftovers”

I do agree, give everyone over 50 a chance to be vaccinated. For unders 50s, the risk of dying or becoming sick is small, so weigh up that risk. I’m under 50 and am already happily vaccinated.

Not small enough if you ask me and it seems (though that’s not properly proven, as far as I know) as if some of the new variants might be affecting more younger people than the wild type.

I want my chance for a shot even being under 50 before the borders get opened. And you are right- I’d also rather take the Boris leftover than nothing. Though I’d very much prefer Pfizer or Moderna.

You do need to look at what she said in its totality. That is wanting to understand when will people be vaccinated enough. And at that time, people need to realise that the virus will be back.

The comments were not about opening early, it was about having a conversation about when will we be ready to open, and to be prepared for the consequences.

That is, just what is the plan?

Why what?

I’d rather take a vaccine that gives me a lower chance of illness and doesn’t come with some dodgy blood clot risk, as small as that might be. Why go with second best? I pay enough taxes.

It’s a widely distributed vaccination that has been used globally on a mass scale with virtually no adverse effects. Ever taken a panadol? All drugs come with risk.

I pay a lot of tax as well, and I’m sick of being wasted on border closures when we have incredibly safe and effective vaccines available.

All drugs come with risk.
Some with more, some with less.

I already said I would take AZ over nothing if that was the choice. It isn’t here in New Zealand, it’s Pfizer or nothing. And so far it’s nothing for me so please keep the borders shut until I get my vaccine.

And there we go. Me me me me. There’s a global pandemic, yet you want 0 risk from it. There’s an effective, exceptionally safe vaccine, but you want another brand because you don’t think it’s good enough for you.

Truly the lucky country 🙄

I think you didn’t manage to read my post!

I cannot get the oh so effective and safe vaccine either. I live in New Zealand (as I’ve mentioned often enough now) and it’s waiting for Pfizer or nothing over here.

And without being vaccinated at all, I think it’s fair enough to not wanting the borders opened. It’s not about me me me, I’d simply prefer not to be exposed to the virus and die. How egocentric of me.

I think you didn’t manage to read my post!

I did. You’re wanting to pick and choose vaccines. I am aware that, at this point, you only access what NZ has offered, but you’re pushing a very common line that “AZ is dangerous, I don’t want it”.

And without being vaccinated at all, I think it’s fair enough to not wanting the borders opened. Nothing to do with me me me but yes, I’d prefer not to be exposed to the virus and die. Total egocentric of me.

You’ve said you’re under 50? (I think, sorry if I missed that), you won’t die.

Who’s the one peddling complete BS here now?

Plenty of cases of under 50 years old dying. Both of Covid and of blood clots. Plenty.

Life comes with risk. If you honestly believe there are “plenty” of cases of deaths, especially of blood clots, then sorry but you’re being a little naive. It’s a pandemic. There will be risks. They need to be managed. If your position is that we shut down the world until individuals receive a vaccine of their specific choosing, then you live unbelievably privileged life.

I’ve said plenty of times that I’d be happy with the AZ vaccine rather than no vaccine at all. No need for such aggression if you can’t bother to read my posts upthread.

Settle down. You also called it “Boris Johnson’s leftovers”. Pushing this bizarre position isn’t doing anyone any good. You’ve also attacked the VA CEO for making the valid point that we need to move on, and being realistic when saying some people may die (just like the flu).

But don’t let the truth get in the way of an agenda.
