Virgin Australia UpgradeMe pricing and success

Was a few weeks ago CNS - BNE return. Booked 24 June for 25th and 28th flights. $105 for both bids and was successful for the 6am flight back.

Does anyone know if doing online check-in will take you out of the running for bid now upgrades?

My first try at this. Have a long trip in business except for the first leg HBA – MEL.

$55 min was accepted on the morning of the flight.

Why would you bother for a 1 hour flight. Surely you could have survived in YX?

My wife recently flew CBR-OOL in Y and got the offer for $100. I advised her not to take it. How could it be worthwhilw in those J "cabins" that are open for the world to view and smirk? It's enough to make J pax cringe, Shame on Bain (but they have no shame, just a profit at all costs motivation).

$100 is a great deal for that route and 100% worthwhile. And most aircraft are still fitted with dividers, but even if they're not, J is still a better place to sit for 90 minutes than Y.

More room, comfier seat, more leg room, meal, drinks plus a couple of beers in the lounge pre flight. For not much more than paying for a normal flex economy I can go business. I can afford it and I don't fly very often so I may as well upgrade if it's cheap.

EDIT: Replied to wrong comment so fixed it.

This means there are two seats left and five people bidding, right?

I would say yes but I would also caution that it doesn't mean you're one of the people missing out. It just means one person has bid more than you for one of the two seats available (if you interpret the info at the top the same way I have).

They are playing on people's FOMO by giving them only the information that makes them bid higher. I get why they do it but as a consumer it is annoying.

I usually get $65 ex CBR, but always decline, as it's a short flight and I'm in row 3 or 4. I can live without a rushed meal and a drink for an hour or two, especially I can have them before and after in the lounge, if I wish.

But otherwise, I can see the value for non-status pax.

So I'm sitting in 1F right now, though I can't help but feel somewhat duped by the opague bidding process. The upgrade came through late morning for a late afternoon flight. I've been monitoring the flight and last night there was only 1 J seat left. And this morning, I saw there was none but that was before the upgrade came through.

And after a series of outbid notices from yesterday, I ended up with a bid of $102 just before the bidding window closed.

1C and 1D are currently empty!!!

There's a lovely cabin manager to make my $102 a bit better nevertheless.
